3 FoundersARE WE A MOVEMENT?

You may have recently heard the words "Marianist Movement." This is a concept that makes us rethink the notion of an individual piety or an isolated community, a concept that calls on our participation in the larger Marianist Family helping it remain organized so that it might use its existing strengths to grow new life, new communities, new missions and new Grace.

With this issue of the E-news we proclaim our membership in the Marianist Family on our masthead where we add the words, "A Member of the Marianist Family." By doing this we proclaim an identity larger than ourselves as we seek to stretch ourselves beyond who we are and into a larger world that includes our Sisters of the Daughters of Mary and our Brothers in the Society of Mary.

But, as the numbers of our vowed sisters and brothers decreases, as their missions become diminished, as their resources become strained, is it not fair to ask, "What is to become of our family? How does the Marianist charism survive?" Is it then a stretch to ask, "How does the Marianist charism thrive?"

Please join me in a belief that what Blessed William Joseph Chaminade envisioned in front of Our Lady of the Pillar, what Venerable Adle de Batz de Trenquellon sensed as a love for God and what Venerable Marie-Thrse Charlotte de Lamourous lived at The Misricorde is not only worth saving, it is worth expanding to new people, new generations and new places where we have not been. It is worthy of the creation of a movement.

Please go to our donation page here and give prayerful consideration to a monthly contribution that is within your budget. With your assistance we will be a movement that will, like our founders, energize our church and change our world.

peace and love,

aj

NACMS
Thanks to our friend Joyce Daniels at NACMS, the
"Guide to Lay Life in the Marianist Tradition" is now offered in a neat, booklet form. Set your printer to two-sided (duplex) printing. The pages can then be stapled in the center and folded into a book. The format is very easy to read, and makes a handsome copy. Joyce has also formatted the Spanish, French, and Portuguese versions.

The PDF documents are all uploaded on the web,
Here is the link

We send our appreciation to Joyce Daniels for her formatting expertise....as well as all our friends at NACMS who helped to make this document a reality.

State (of Religious Living in the World) Community October Retreat with Renewal of Vows
by Jacqui Griswold

State_Retreat_Oct_09 My Community, with members coming from all over the United States, meets in Dayton at Bergamo Center every October for their Fall retreat.  It is always a beautiful time of year to drive from Indianapolis to Dayton with colorful trees and the cooler weather.

This year we read Brother Ray Fitz's paper "The Marianist Movement and the Challenge of Urban Justice and Reconciliation".  We had him for our resource person to further clarify his vision and reflect about practical ways to energize people around our mission.
The Saturday evening liturgy included a renewal of our vow with each member stating  how it would be lived out over the next year.

Our retreats are open to people who may be interested in joining or just sharing in our reflections.  The Spring 2010 retreat will be a bit later next year.  We will meet for one day in July on the day after the Continental Assembly concludes.  I hope that I will see many of you at this wonderful community experience which the lay Marianists in Hawaii are planning.  On-line registration is available now for the July 22-25th meeting in Honolulu.
The Student and the Man with the Rosary
Submitted by Brother John Samaha, S.M.

More than a hundred years ago, a man traveling in a train found himself seated next to someone who appeared to be a wealthy peasant with a rosary in his hands. "Sir," the student addressed the old man, "do you still believe that old stuff ?"

"Yes," the other replied, "I certainly do. What about you?"

The student burst out laughing and went on: "I don't believe that silly stuff. Follow my advice: throw your rosary out the window and learn what science has to say about it."

"Science? ... Maybe you could explain it to me?" replied the man humbly, with tears in his eyes.

The student noticed the emotion on the face of his traveling companion and to avoid hurting his feelings further, told him: "Please give me your address, I will send you some information."

Then, glancing at the business card the man had taken out of his inside pocket, the young man fell silent. The card read: Louis Pasteur, Director, Scientific Research Institute, Paris

MERRY CHRISTMAS

We weren't there. We did not get to experience the ecstasy of Christ's birth. We didn't see the star, hear the angel's proclamations or hear Jesus' first cries. We did not stand at the manger wondering what is to become of this child? Yet, we get to experience Christmas all the time.

For instance, above here in the newsletter you will see an announcement that tomorrow the Vessel Community will be making their commitment as Lay Marianists. If you have the good fortune of being there, you will witness new life in the Marianist Family, you will receive Father Paul Marshall's proclamation of the gospel and hear the first words of dedication from nine young men and women who have a lifetime of possibilities before them. You will stand in wonder of what is to become of this miracle, this fortunate Grace that has been bestowed upon us.

Also above is a story about members of the State Community re-newing their vows. Is the wonderment any less? What is to become of the next year with this renewed commitment? Where and how will these Lay Marianists proclaim the Word? What star will they follow?

In short, we are at the manger, constantly standing in wonder of the Grace that has been bestowed upon us and wondering what will become of this amazing gift we have been given.

The Leadership Team, Area Representatives and Project Leaders of the Marianist Lay Network wish you a Christmas like the first Christmas, filled with the wonder, the Grace and the awe of what we are to become in the New Year.

Merry Christmas.Winter Trees
