cartoon peopleAdd a Little Zest to Community Life

Life can be a struggle. With its mix of personalities, schedules, commitment levels and effort, community life can be even more so.

Sometimes the community struggle might be with an individual member - someone who talks too much, someone who is always late or never comes, or someone who won't stop talking about themselves.

Sometimes the struggle might be the community - no one makes meeting a priority, there is no connection between members, there is no direction, it's become a chore or it's become dull and boring.

The result is a lackluster community experience that makes community more and more difficult to sustain.

The Marianist Lay Formation Initiative (MLFI) and MLNNA can help your community when it comes to these struggles. MLFI is sponsored, in part, by your contributions to MLNNA.  Through MLFI you can be put in contact with a mentor who is willing to work with your community, to help it revive or to help you address a specific problem or challenge. Your community may find comfort working with someone steeped in the Marianist spirit who wants to walk with your community.

If you are interested contact Pati Krasensky, Director of MLFI at patikras@Hotmail.com or at 215-634-4116. She would love to hear from you.

peace and love,
aj

Northeast Lay Marianists Gather, Share Resources, and Plan for Future

Phily 2009 Group
On September 19, the Marianist Center in Philadelphia hosted a gathering for lay Marianists in the northeast to share updates and brainstorm for future programs, activities, and local faith community support.  Pati Krasensky and Brian Reavey facilitated the event for the various lay groups.

Each lay community was asked to send at least one representative, and as it turned out, more than twenty people representing fifteen different communities attended.  In addition, three Marianist priests seeking greater collaboration with lay people in the northeast also participated (Frs. Ted Cassidy, Rich Kuhn, and Paul Landolfi).

A LESSON FROM THE GOOSE

When you see geese heading south for the winter flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% more flying range than possible if each bird flew on its own.  People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.  If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way.

When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point.  It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs when working with others.

Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.  Encouragement is motivating.

Finally -- and this is very important -- when a goose gets sick or wounded by gunshot and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection.  They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies.  Only then do they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their group.

How wonderful it would be if we had the sense of a goose, and would stand by each other in like manner.

 GREEN TIPS
Green Tips brought to you by the Mt. St. John Green Team

Tips for an eco-friendly Thanksgiving

1)    Make use of
your reusable shopping bags. With all the shopping you will be doing this season, put those reusable shopping bags in your car so you have them with you when you go into the store. recycle around globe

2)    Try and purchase locally grown foods. When possible buy organic and locally grown foods. Also, pay attention to packaging. The less packaging the be
tter.

3)    If you are traveling make sure your car is in good
working order. At the minimum, make sure the tires are properly inflated. If flying, consider buying carbon credits to offset your portion of carbon dioxide emissions generated by your flight.

4)    Cook less food. Typically, we prepare twice as much food as is needed, and much of this goes to waste. When making your menu, consider real portion size for our guests, and relook at the number of dishes and desserts on your list.

5)    Say thank you for all those you are blessed to have in your life and a special prayer for the growers and preparers of the food on our table.
