       READ THIS

It's hot. Vacations abound. With the sun staying around a few extra hours each day there are more activities for the kids and, for adults, it's hard to get around to a community meeting. What to do?

How about doing what many people do while surviving the lazy days of summer - read a book. Our friends at the North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS) have a wonderful collection of works. Below are links to many of the resources available through NACMS.

   For Research?
   For The Classroom?
   For Faith Communities/Small Groups?
   For Inspirational/Spirituality/Charism?
   About Mary?
   About the Founders/Marianist History?
   About Youth/Heroes/Heroines?
   For Religious Life?

Read and enjoy the summer.

The Marianist Volunteer Program Says Goodbye to Five Volunteers

This month, five volunteers will finish their terms of service with the Marianist Volunteer Program.  Heather Mikus, Nicole Ansiaux, and Courtney Magner, who have been serving in St. Louis, Missouri, will wrap up their MVP experience with a retreat and closing celebration in early July.
Sarah Wdowiak and Emily Richardson will conclude their service with MVP in Karonga, Malawi, at a retreat during the last week of July.

All five of these young women have done tremendous work in the agencies where they have served and have worked intentionally throughout their time in MVP to grow together with their communities in the Marianist Charism, to grow spiritually, and to seek to live in solidarity with the people they have been serving. The Marianist Family extends its thanks, support, and prayers to these volunteers as they leave the MVP and head on to the next steps of their journeys.
We know there are great things in store for each of them!

International Meeting of Lay Marianist - Nairobi Kenya August 1-7, 2009

Much effort has already gone into the planning for this every 3 year event - the coming together of representatives from Marianist Lay communities from all over the world.  At each of the last 4 International meetings, there has been a foundational document written.

The leadership team has met a Challenge adopted at the 4th International Meeting of Marianist Lay Communities "to integrate the documents from the past four Convocations into one document that would be the starting point to a guide about lay life."  The result is
The first draft of the document for this year's meeting is now being translated and we hope to get it out to delegates attending the meeting as soon as it is translated into the three languages.  The name of this year's document is Marianist Lay Communities in the Church and in the World, the first part will be a narrative report of the survey that was conducted (link provided in April E-news), followed by a summary of the survey, then concluding with challenges and recommendations of the writing team.  Delegates will be asked to ponder on the survey results and identifiy future challenges that help Marianist Lay Community  members live as active members in both the Church and the world.  Visit the website

recycle around globe GREEN TIPS
Green Tips brought to you by the Mt. St. John Green Team

Save money and the environment by replacing some of your cleaning products with baking soda:
  • Cleaning fruits and vegetables. Sprinkle baking soda in water, soak and rinse the fruits and vegetables.
  • Cleaning barbeque grills. Spray baking soda on grills, let soak and rinse.
  • Baby bottles. Give a good cleaning with baking soda and warm water. (Add to bath water to relieve diaper rash irritations.
  • Keep drains free-flowing. Put 4 tablespoons of soda and flush down with hot water every week to prevent them from getting plugged.
  • Clean canvas bags. When produce leaves stains on your shopping canvas bags, use baking soda dry and with a small brush rub canvas bag clean,

SAYING "YES!"

Dottie slowly grew older and more frail. She surely knew death was approaching. She took advantage of her slow march toward eternal life by going through pictures in a way that would help her only child, Carol, remember a life well lived.

Some fourteen months after Dottie's death Carol mustered up the courage to go through those pictures her mother had graciously set aside. With a picture of her father, who had passed away decades earlier, Carol found a note from Brother Larry. Although Carol can no longer remember Brother Larry's last name she remembers how Brother Larry and her dad would go fishing together and enjoy those things that come with a day of sitting in a boat waiting for a bite. The note was a congratulatory one that was given to her parents on the occasion of Carol's birth. It came with a dollar bill for the newborn's college education.

One of the things Carol does remember about Brother Larry is that he was a Marianist. She also remembered that his kindness was evident in much more than that dollar bill.

Our "Yes!" to spread the gospel message is not limited to words. As Marianists we bring Christ's presence to the world more often and more effectively by a life of grace. A kind demeanor, a pleasant note, a small gift and a hearty laugh are those things that bear witness to our Marianist heritage so that sixty years from now someone will say, "I don't remember the last name, but I remember she was a Marianist and I remember the goodness that she passed on to me."

peace and love,
