Reflection - Blog
by Greg Calhoun

I am in Cleveland doing a year of service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

I am a member of the Summons community hoping to get involved in non-profit writing or journalism involving religion, and run a blog called intention on purposeful living and social justice.

Reach Out and Be Present
When I walked home on Friday, I said "Good evening" to a stranger raking some leaves. At first, he didn't say anything in response. After a few steps, I heard him say, "Same to you." He seemed to return to raking and I returned to walking. Then, he continued, saying, "There should be more people like you in the world."

What lesson is there in this experience?

Environmental Tips
Marianist Environmental Education Center

USE BOTH SIDES OF PAPER
American businesses throw away 21 million tons of paper every year, equal to 175 pounds per office worker. For a quick and easy way to halve this, set your printer's default option to print double-sided (duplex pri
nting).

RETHINK BOTTLED WATER
Nearly 90% of plastic water bottles are not recycled, instead taking thousands of years to decompose. Buy a reusable container and fill it with tap water, a great choice for t
Earthhe environment, your wallet, and possibly your health. The EPA's standards for tap water are more stringent than the FDA's standards for bottled water.

President's Message

tony GarasciaI don't know how long Tony Garascia has been involved with the Marianists. It has been decades. He is a member of the State Community and the Shekan Community in South Bend, Indiana. He is one of the original incorporators of MLNNA and he has served MLNNA in many capacities including President.
                         Tony Garacia

He is currently President of the International Organization of Marianist Lay Communities and  Treasurer of MLNNA.

This Summer, after the International meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, Tony will be stepping back to take a well earned breather from his long and dedicated work on our behalf. He'll always be a phone call away, thank God, but he will be missed.

Tony and his wife Beth deserve some uninterrupted weekends enjoying each other and their family but this leaves MLNNA with a dilemma - we need a new Treasurer.   If you're interested, or if you know someone who might be interested in this ministry, contact me at aj@marianistfamily.org

Our finances are not complicated, but some knowledge of basic bookkeeping would be helpful. Should you accept the task you will join the MLNNA Leadership Team to assist us in handling our growth and developing new direction. We hope to have a new person on board before the end of the year so that Tony can concentrate his efforts on his final international meeting in Kenya this August, so a quick reply is appreciated.

You will not be able to fill Tony's shoes but you can bring your own shoes to our walk and leave footprints for others to follow.

peace and love,
AJ Wagner

Marianist Volunteer Reflection

Kenya womanMarianist Volunteer Molly Heineman is working in Karonga, Malawi as part of the Women's Empowerment Program at M.I.R.A.C.L.E. - a vocation and technical training school run by the Marianist District of Eastern Africa. Below are some of her reflections about her work and one particular woman she has encountered.

Margaret Nyirenda

A Woman to Meet.....

This is Margaret Nyirenda and she is caring for her 4 grandchildren by herself.   Their parents died and Margaret is a widow.  She joined MIRACLE to help support her eldest granddaughter who is in secondary school because she didn't have enough money for school fees.  When we visited her yesterday, she told us that she was so grateful for MIRACLE because her granddaughter just graduated from secondary school this term!

In our meeting with all the women in her village after we visited her home, Margaret was a clear advocate for our office, the program policies and how we stick to them.  Several times women asked questions that Margaret chose to answer instead of forcing us to repeat policies we have.

Margaret is just another example of why I'm grateful to be a part of this program.  Knowing that the work we're doing is leading to grandmothers caring for their grandchildren is definitely something I can support. :)

Retreat Fall08 BonfireMarianist State & Miryam Joint Retreat in Dayton

On a crisp October day the Family of Mary came together in Dayton OH for a day of sharing and reflection on the Roots of our mission and ways to continue Father Chaminade's vision into the next decade.  There was a rich diversity of experiences and lifestyles with Marianist sisters, brothers and married and single lay members attending.

The retreat was jointly planned by the State Community and the Myriam Community.  These two communities renewed their Marianist commitments at mass.  This was followed by a fun evening singing songs and roasting marshmallows around a bonfire.

New Canadian Area Representative for MLNNA
Marcel Dion Josee Roberge
Marcel Dion has been selected as the new MLNNA representive for Canada.  He and his wife Jose Roberge have four beautiful daughters who join them in family music ministry.

I'm happy to report that even though Richard Thibault will step down as the MLNNA representative he continues in the role of liason to Haiti. It's a big job on its own, and he is invaluable to the leadership team.

The Economic Crisis
Social Justice and the Marianist Family In Light of Current Economic Problems
by Victor M. Forlani, SM

To Readers with a Social Conscience

Which of these principles of Catholic Social Teaching are adhered to and which not and how?

1.   The economy exists for the person, not the person for the economy.

2.  All economic life should be shaped by moral principles. Economic choices and institutions must be judged by how they protect or undermine the life and dignity of the human person, support the family, and serve the common good.

3.  A fundamental moral measure of any economy is how the poor and vulnerable are faring.

4.  All people have the right to life and to secure the basic necessities of life (e.g., food, clothing, shelter, education, health care, safe environment, economic security).

5.  All people have the right to economic initiative, to productive work, to just wages and benefits, to decent working conditions, as well as to organize and join unions and other associations.

6.  All people, to the extent they are able, have a corresponding duty to work, a responsibility to provide for the needs of their families, and an obligation to contribute to the broader society.

7.  In economic life, free markets have both clear advantages and limits; government has essential responsibilities and limitations; voluntary groups have irreplaceable roles, but cannot substitute for the proper working of the market and the just policies of the state.

8.  Society has a moral obligation, including governmental action where necessary, to assure opportunity, meet basic human needs, and pursue justice in economic life.

9.  Workers, owners, managers, stockholders, and consumers are moral agents in economic life. By our choices, initiative, creativity, and investment, we enhance or diminish economic opportunity, community life, and social justice.  There is no wall between these two facets of our involvement.

10.  The global economy has moral dimensions and human consequences. Decisions on investment, trade, aid, and development should protect human life and promote human rights, especially for those most in need wherever they might live on this globe.
