Congratulations Angie Rosero
Our San Antonio Regional Representative Angie Cortez was recently married surrounded and supported by her community.
PLEASE PRAY FOR:

The success of the Family Retreat Program in Hawaii.  We hope to find more families who can get away from their busy lives and find the sacred in quality family time together.

Please pray for the continued energies of the staff and all our volunteers who support this program.

Please Pray For:

Here in Haiti, things are not doing so well since the hurricanes seem to be trying to destroy us. In Port au Prince it rained so much that some parts of the city are flooded, many families are striken, without any help and are left to themselves, bringing still more misery to our small country.

Outside the capital, the damages are terrible, especially in the Gonaives region where it is still worse than three years ago when hurricane Jeanne hit.

In the North and North-East the damages are so great that we can't describe them. In St-Marc, where there is a very active MLC, some people are also hit by the storms.

Please pray for the Haitian people and our Marianists brothers and sisters.

Wesly Etienne

Thank-you to Richard Thibault for translating Wesley's message.

An Evening with the Marianists

Englsih Mag

The Marianist Center in Philadelphia is launching a new series on the last Thursday night of each month

Environmental Tips from MEECRecycle

RECYCLE GLASS
Recycled glass reduces related air pollution by 20 percent and related water pollution by 50 percent. If it isn't recycled it can take a million years to decompose.

RECYCLE NEWSPAPER
There are 63 million newspapers printed each day in the U.S. Of these, 44 million, or about 69%, of them will be thrown away. Recycling just the Sunday papers would save more than half a million trees every week.

BOOK REVIEW

I'd like to hear from you!  What did you read over the summer that others might find interesting?  Send a short couple of paragraphs with your review and I'll publish in the next E-news.  MLNNA editor

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.

This is a photo of the MLNNA leaders who gathered in Dayton to determine how we can do a better job of serving our members. (Many others gathered with us in prayer and Spirit.)

Kay Stone brought her flower child spirit of Hawaiian joy and reconfigured the duties of our Area Reps to do a better job of communication.

Mike Pera was the young adult champion who will also lead us to a new and better web presence for better contact with members.

Isabella Moyer provided the vision of a Church changed and charged with love by Lay Marianists the world over.

I'm the one with the beard who listened in awe to the wisdom, faith and Grace that filled the room and our hearts.

Mike Zeimski gave guidance on how to better assist communities in formation.

Anne Petratis guided us through the current hardships that made an Area Reps job more than difficult and provided wisdom that will lead to solutions for those hardships.

Steve Hemphill reminded us that to be Marianist is to be in community with one another.

Jacqui Griswold offered creativity to do the immense job of producing this page and Saying Yes every month.

Tony Garacia reminded us that to be a Lay Marianist is to always be at the beginning point of formation.

Susan Vogt pushed for roles that required action and not just talk.

Mike Gillespie reminded us that Christ is in the world and we can enhance his presence.

Paula Zeimski put forth ideas that will connect us better to one another.

Val Bergeron expressed the urgency of our work and the need for transparency.

We were also joined by Ruth Pera who told us of the wonderful work of our Marianist Volunteers in Africa and St. Louis.

Brother Tom Giardino reminded us of the work that he is doing with the International Center for Marianist Formation and offered us new tools to build lay communities.

Richard Drabik gave us insight into the challenges of building a new web site.

Although every one of these individuals has a title, this was a Marianist meeting of equals guided by the Spirit of the Pentecost. Representatives from Lay Communities, the Affiliates, the Retreat Centers, LIFE, The Adele Social Justice Project, Marianist Young Adults, the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative, the Marianist Volunteers and more gathered in an Upper Room in Dayton with a mission to help you build Church in the world.

Please pray for our collective success.

peace and love,

aj

Marie Therese de Lamourous - September 14th

Marie ThereseA contemporary of Father Chaminade and Sister Adele in the years of turmoil after the French Revolution.  Read more on our MLNNA website.

"In Bordeaux France, a lay women, Marie Therese couragously worked with the Catholic underground to sustain the faithful and continue the work of the Church.  When she was forced to move out of Bordeaux into the countryside, she continued to serve the Church there by teaching catechism to peasants and children, arranging clandestine sacraments, and serving as a spirtual leader to the local population."

Abstract from "A Spiritual Crucible:  The Life of Mlle de Lamourous During the French Revolution"  by Benjamin Dougherty.

Consider reading more about this early Lay Marianist.  The North American Center for Marianist Studies has a number of books.  I like the small one titled Marie Therese de Lamaourous Firm of Hand, Loving of Heart  by Joseph Stefanelli, SM

Her motto:  Seek first the reign of God and its rightousness and all else will be given to you, over and above.

MLCMarianist World Day of Prayer is Sunday October 12

This is one of the days that Marianist around the world unite in a common celebration.  See the link to the International Marianist Lay Community website for how Brazil is celebrating and maybe you will get an idea for your own local community.

We're less than 2 months until the election, and there are some excellent resources available that individuals or communities could use to help prepare for the elections in the light of Christian principles.  They include:

    * Faithful Citizenship is the US bishops program that focuses on their statement, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.   Visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org for dozens of resources, most free, including clip art, ideas for worship and teaching, family discussion guides, etc.  Check out the Novena for Faithful Citizenship (available in text or podcast format).

    * Sojourners has published a voters issue guide titled "Principles and Policies for Christian Voters."      Click here to download a copy.

    * The Platform for the Common Good connects the country's founding principles with Catholic Social     Teaching - read it, promote it, sign it.

    * The Maryknoll Office on Global Affairs has published "US Elections:  Loving Our Neighbor in a              Shrinking World," that reflects particularly on the implications of the elections on the developing world.            Click here.

    * NETWORK - offers several workshops on the elections.  Click here to read the workshop descriptions.

INVITATION for FALL RETREAT
Petrais_Peta_backrub
Dear fellow lay Marianists,

The State Community (short for "The State of Religious Living in the World") and the Miryam Community are two vowed lay communities in the United States.  Each of these communities hold regular retreats for members but every third year we hold a joint retreat at Bergamo in Dayton. This year the theme of the retreat is "Marianist Movements: Common Roots and Future."

We think this theme will be of interest to the broader Marianist community and thus we are happy to extend an invitation to other lay Marianists. Because of our common Marianist commitments we've chosen a theme that we think will help us deepen our Marianist connections and help us look together toward how to nurture lay Marianist communities in the unknown future.

We are, therefore, also making a special effort to invite not only our own members but also SM's, FMI's, other emerging lay communities that have members spreading out across the US, and anyone with an interest in the Marianist charism. We hope that by relooking as the spirit of the foundation of Marianist communities and using these insights to launch us into creative ways of forming and sustaining communities of the future, we will start to see what parts of our charism are enduring and what techniques and formats need to be adapted for a new age. Thus, we invite you to be part of this grand experiment in trying to understand the future of lay communities.

Editor's Note
Flower gardenWe are in that transition time between summer and fall.  Kids are going back to school and all those activities and commitments that we have in our lives are resuming or we have new commitments being added to our schedules.
Consider taking time for yourself to come away and focus on your faith life.

There are two opportunities listed in this newsletter.  If you can't get to Baltimore or Dayton this fall, look for an opportunity in your area to connect with others to build community and reflect upon the priorities of life.
