ACTION SUGGESTION
Be
a better advocate with your public officials. Often the biggest barriers
to contacting elected representatives is finding their contact information or
just remembering to call them. Make it easy on yourself by putting their
office phone numbers in your cell phone memory. That way you can easily
give them a quick call about a legislative issue even if you are in your
car. No cell phone? Include them in the speed-dialing list on your
landline. Make it easy on yourself and be a more frequent
citizen-advocate.

GOODSEARCH.COM Did you try replacing your Google search with a Goodsearch.com? I found everything for which I searched. Designate MLNNA as "Who you Goodsearch For"
The website count shows we had 315 searches in March and 230 to date in April...resulting in $5.45 for us. Not much shopping has been done with GoodShop.com (up to 37 percent of each purchase is donated to MLNNA) but we have $1.35 profit from this engine. Keep up the "good" work.
Background GoodSearch.com is
a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising
revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users
designate. Use it just as you would any search engine. www.GoodSearch.com

President's Message
There are the four different ways that Jesus sent his
apostles out before he ascended into heaven:
Matthew: "Go, therefore, and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you."
Mark: "Go into the whole world
and proclaim the gospel to every creature.
Luke: "Thus it
is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third
day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his
name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem."
John: "Follow me." This is the mission passed from the apostles to Chaminade,
Adele and Marie Therese, passed on to you, passed on to your community and
passed on to MLNNA.
I have asked before but I must ask again: How should MLNNA help you achieve our
mission? The suggestion box remains open (and largely empty) at
aj@marianistfamily.org. All suggestions will be considered at the May meeting
of the MLNNA Leadership Team.
Please let us know. AJ Wagner

Community Spotlight - Central Area of US including Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin
ARIZONA
When Affiliates
Al and Lorraine Pirc moved from Pueblo, Colorado, to Arizona,
they went with a mandate from the Southern Colorado Affiliates to form an
Affiliate group in Sun City and spread the
Marianist Spirit! After Al's sudden death, Lorraine
kept in touch with Pueblo
friends and would attend Affiliate functions when she was visiting. When Fr. Al
McMenamy visited Lorraine
and her second husband, Jim Pojman, in January of 1995, Fr.
"Mac" asked if she might invite some prospective members. Almost two dozen friends attended a "Come and See" gathering
and that was the beginning of the Sun City Affiliates! Sixteen are still active and embrace
Marianist spirituality. A contingency of Pueblo Affiliates visited the Sun City group shortly after they were formed to welcome
them into the Family. Fr. McMenamy usually
visits the group for mini-Retreats in
Advent and Lent.
Colorado The Marianist Associate Affiliates,
Southern Colorado Chapter was formed in 1967 (41 years ago!!) when the
Marianists staffed Roncalli High School for boys in Pueblo.
The Marianist Religious departed in 1971, but the Marianist Spirit still
lives! Various Brothers visited us for at
least twice a year over the intervening years, until Fr. Al McMenamy was named
our Moderator. Monthly meetings are held during the school year
with a family picnic in the summer. Fr.
"Mac" visits us about 4 times a year. On
those weekends, we celebrate Eucharist on Friday evenings, followed by a
social. Saturdays and Sundays are busy
from one o'clock in the afternoon with study, discussion and prayer; Mass at
five o'clock, followed by dinner at a local restaurant. When Fr. Mac is not with us, we meet in
members' homes once a month for study, discussion and prayer. We currently have approximately 30 active members.
We strive to work in whatever areas we are called to serve
in the spirit of Mary's words at Cana, "Do
whatever He tells you." We encourage
members to be active in parish work, community work, and volunteer work, with a
Marianist spirit. We donate regularly to
the DECAMP project in Mexico
and to the Day Care in East St. Louis
where Bro. Norbert Karpfinger has been active.
The primary purpose of our organization is to form members in the spirit
of the Family of Mary according to the writings of Chaminade in order to
intensify their Christian way of life.
An intrinsic element is the work of recruiting new members to share the
Marianist spirit. Before new members are officially received, they are prepared
during a formation period, usually for one to two years.
Our biggest challenge is attracting younger members. A new push is underway with Roncalli
graduates who are encouraged to form their own group following their particular
interests. Bro. Jack Ventura and Fr. Al McMenamy are helping with
this endeavor.
NEBRASKA
The first group of Omaha Lay Marianist Affiliates made their
Consecration May 1, 1974. The Marianist priests and brothers were residing
at Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School
and the protocol was to invite the parents of a junior or senior student to
join the lay group. The formation program followed for about six months before
actual entry as a Marianist Affiliate.
Today, there are around 20 active members. We meet monthly, with
gatherings consisting of either a Holy Hour or a prayer service in the Chapel
followed by a potluck dinner. Occasionally we go to Mass together and out to
breakfast. When Father Al McMenamy comes to visit, (about 3-4 times a year) we
spend much of a week-end together in prayer, discussion and sharing. Each
summer we gather for a picnic with our extended families.
The Omaha Affiliates have a study group which meets weekly
to pray and discuss selected topics. These range from books written by
Marianists to the Renew books on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Several times a year the Affiliates prepare
and serve meals at the Stephen Center, a shelter for the homeless and abused in the Omaha area. We assist with
support to the DECAMP program for the economic improvement of people in
deprived areas of Mexico. We help with the major fund-raiser for Gross Catholic
High School, Cele-Bration,
by taking an ad in their program and attending the event itself. We have raised
funds to purchase a statue of Our Blessed Mother for Gross' courtyard. Most
recently, we raised money to assist the students of the LIFE program meet costs
of travel to New Orleans
where clean-up work will be carried out due to the devastation of the
hurricane. KANSAS From Marceta Reilly (sister of Fr. David Fleming, S.M)
I am in Hoyt, KS, just north of Topeka,
KS. I am in two MLCs.....a daily
lectio online MLC called Our Lady of the Round Table (OLRT) and I have started
a monthly telephone group called Harvest Women, comprised mostly of women in NE Kansas. Joanne
McCracken, NJ, coordinates the online group and I coordinate the telephone
group.
There are no Marianist schools or vowed religious in KS that
I know of. My involvement developed out of a Virtual Learning Community Course
from Dayton. I took the course, met some great people in it, and we decided to
form our online community. From that I started our Harvest Women's group for
some of my local friends. Harvest Women
is a monthly tele-community of six women which has been meeting by phone for
almost two years. The mission of the group
is to "harvest women" to deeper spirituality.
All but one of the women lives in Kansas. The women meet monthly on a conference call,
read common books and materials (like Things
Marianist), and through the discussions, help deepen their own spiritual
lives.

to face meeting/retreat.]

service will be held. A pot-luck celebration will include a special Portuguese flavour
from the Circulo de Boa Nova community.
Isabella
Moyer, Regional Responsible to the International Organization, gave an update on
the plans for the International
Meeting of MLC in Kenya, 2009. Discussion began on a selection process for
choosing a delegate for Winnipeg. The ongoing financial need of both the MLNNA

Women's Retreat in Kansas

On March 7 & 8, 2008, twenty women gathered in Hoyt, KS,
for a women's retreat entitled Journey of the Soul. The one and a half day retreat helped women
reflect on Being, not their Doing. It
provided a gift of time so that women could experience the gentle joy of being
with Christ. The retreat was sponsored by the Harvest Women's MLC, a
Marianist telegroup which meets monthly over the phone to deepen their own
personal spirituality. As an outgrowth of this purpose, the Harvest Women have
sponsored a retreat for local women during the past two years.
Joanne McCracken and Chris Suriano, lay members
of the Marianist Community, were the retreat leaders. Joanne is a member of the Harvest Women, and
both she and Chris work at the Marianist Retreat Center, Cape May Point, New Jersey. |
Holy Week Activities
Gail Miller at the Iraq anniversary demonstration
The Anawim Community in Greater Cincinnati gathered
several times during Holy Week. The community celebrated a Seder Meal on
Tuesday. Members gathered on Wednesday for a demonstration on the 5th
anniversary of the Iraq War, standing in the cold, blustery wind and rain with
hundreds of others, holding t-shirts representing each of the 4000 US soldiers who have died in Iraq. On
Good Friday, several community members participated in the "Way of the Cross,
Way of Justice" at Fountain Square
in downtown Cincinnati. |
MLNNA Area Representatives Last month I provided the break-down of states in our various regions and asked if you knew your area representative. Here are those members who have agreed to be the MLNNA leadership's link to the Marianist Lay Communities in the various regions in North America. If you want to know about communities in any of these areas contact them.

MLNNA Leadership Team
Your MLNNA leadership team met on Saturday February 16th. We want to share with everyone what we are doing
and thus I am providing a brief summary of the meeting.
1. We
reviewed the organizations GOALS for the next 4 years and our desire to
assure that our IDENTITY statement is reflected within them. Some changes in the goals were suggested to reflect representation of all Lay Marianists, not just Marianist Lay Communiites.
WE ARE
- connecting lay
Marianists on the local, continental and international levels
- building and sustaining
vibrant communities of prayer and action
- mentoring new
communities and future leaders
- forming members
in our Marianist charism by supporting existing and developing new educational
resources
- leading a new
vision of Church, egalitarian in leadership, in the spirit of our ancient
Gospel roots and our Marianist Founders
- reaching out and effecting
change through social justice initiatives
- hosting the next
Continental Assembly in 2010
- deepening
relationships within the larger Marianist Family
- allying with Mary in her mission
to bring forth God's reign in the world.
OUR GOALS
- foster relationships among Marianist Lay Communities
- discern and respond to shared needs and concerns of
Marianist Lay Communities
- develop effective language, processes, and structures
that help lay Marianists proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ
- collaborate with other branches of the Marianist Family
to achieve this vision
- represent the interests of Marianist Lay Communities to
the broader Marianist Family and to the Church
2. Brainstorming
of the theme for and planning committee for the next Continental Assembly of Lay Marianist
- Honolulu, Hawaii Chaminade University, July
22-25, 2010.
3. The
Feb '08 MLNNA Directory lists 1588 members from 65 communities within the
regions. However, there are at
least 10 non-geographic communities.
The official membership record is maintained by Marie Wyman at mlnna@aol.com. We discussed who should have access to this
information and the method of updating.
4. The
next International Lay Marianist meeting will be August 2-8, 2009 in Kenya. Numbers of delegates is based upon
each country's population, we discussed a selection process to determine who would represent our areas. Due to our financial condition delegates will need to pay for most, if not all, expenses.
5. We
have various relationships and linkages with other Marianist
organizations. Marianist Family Council (2
FMI, 2 SM and 2 Lay) is looking to develop a single integrated website. Marianist Social Justice Collaborative
(MSJC) issue team updates and reaffirmed the annual grant from MLNNA of $2000. Isabella Moyer and Kay Stone, provide
linkage to additional organizations: Alliance
for Marianist Lay Formation and Marianist Partners for Young Adult
Ministry respectively.
The
next MLNNA leadership meeting is May 30-June 1. Please provide any input to your officers before that time.
