An Open Letter from the Founding Board of Young Judaea
Chevrei,
Most of you have heard the exciting news about Hadassah's historic decision a few weeks ago to launch Young Judaea as an independent organization so that that it could flourish in the 21st century and beyond.
As the Founding Board of the "new" Young Judaea, we have been charged with the task of leading the movement through this transition and working closely with many other alumni, supporters, and community leaders to envision the future.
The Founding Board members have diverse professional backgrounds and experiences. Our own personal Young Judaea biographies span many different decades and while we could wax poetically about our own Young Judaea journeys (or those of our children), none of us believes that the answer for the future lies in the past. The movement has rightfully evolved since our own days and what is needed for a Zionist movement today is not a replication of what was in place during any particular era of the past.
We are committed to looking forward - and looking forward with greater alumni support than ever before to ensure that Young Judaea continues impacting generations of Jewish youth in profoundly meaningful ways.
Hadassah's recent decision came about after lengthy discussions with Jewish community leaders, alumni, and supporters of the movement both in the United States and Israel. All agreed that a change in Young Judaea's structure and operations was critical to maximize its potential as a unique builder of Jewish leaders in the context of a pluralist, non-partisan youth movement. Hadassah demonstrated great courage by listening to the advice, acting on it, and funding the necessary transition steps to make it a reality.

Thanks for the memories .... by Hannah Diamond (Sprout '02, TY '03-'05, YC '07-'08)
Four and a half year's ago my mother woke me up at 6:00 am, phone to her ear, mouthing "Young Judaea! Young Judaea!" while silently jumping up and down like an excited child. And although there have been difficult times, her passion and love for YJ, as well as boundless energy have not waned in the past four years.
 | | Shelley and Hannah at the Jerusalem Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure |
Of course my mom's relationship with YJ started way earlier than that fateful phone call. My entire life she has been part of YJ, vicariously going to camp through my brother and I, writing peulot with me as I freaked out before conventions, and excitedly dreaming of year course. I know that I owe my love for Israel and my connection to the Jewish community to the incredibly powerful combination of Shelley Sherman and Young Judaea.

More than 200 participate in Celebrate Israel Parade

Thank you to the more than 200 Young Judaeans, volunteers and alumni who participated in the 2011 Celebrate Israel Parade in New York City. This year's parade was the most exciting in years- and the first time that it was broadcast live on television! Marching down Fifth Avenue, the Young Judaea showed their love of Israel and ruach from mid-town all the way uptown.
The Celebrate Israel Parade (formerly Salute to Israel Parade) is the largest event in the world celebrating the anniversary of Israel's Independence, now in its 63rd year. We were joined by tens of thousands of participants stepping off on Fifth Avenue, cheered on by more than one million spectators. Parade spectators watched a sea of blue and white, kachol v'lavan, as community leaders, American and Israeli dignitaries, celebrities, floats and marching bands came together with spirit, joy, and enthusiasm. Take a look at all the photos here! Special thanks to incoming National President of Hadassah Marcie Natan, Ellen Hershkin, Rory Vinokor (our courageous YJ Lion!), Lee Pinchuk, and our fearless YJ staff Rachel Comstock and Nicole Rand. If you would like more information of the Celebrate Israel Parade, feel free to contact Rachel at rcomstock@youngjudaea.org

WUJS Alumni gather in New York City
On May 25, more than 50 WUJS alumni from the last four decades met at the law offices of Herrick Feinstein on Park Avenue where they were hosted by Richard Bass (WUJS alumnus 1977) for a delightful evening of personal reunions and reconnecting with the WUJS program.
As well as the cocktail reception and time to socialize, the alumni also heard personal accounts of their WUJS experiences from Richard Bass (1977) and Jake Shillman (2010) with particular focus on how their WUJS experience impacted their lives. Read more about the reunion here.

איפו אנחנו ? Where are we Gedalia Mazal (Gary Meisels)- Spring '74 WUJS wrote:I live in Beer-Sheva, and have worked at Ben Gurion University since 1975 -almost 36 years! Before moving to Beer-Sheva, I lived in Yamit for seven years and commuted to BGU every day! Young Judaea Sends more than 140 High Schoolers to Israel
More than 140 Israel Summer programs participants left the New York area for the summer of their lives in Israel on June 29. The looks of excitement and anticipation on the faces of all the Judeans getting on the planes was enough to make everyone in the airport jealous of the experience these young people were about to have.
The YJ Machon and YJ Discovery programs give high school students a chance to explore Israel, make new friends - and revive old friendships, practice their Hebrew skills and have a summer they will never forget.

Passings
Charlotte Bloomberg- Young Judaea mourns the passing of Charlotte R. Bloomberg of Medford, Ma. While Charlotte may be best remembered as the mother of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Young Judaea remembers her as a generous alumnae who was born the same year as Young Judaea and served as an early unit president.
Charlotte's dedication to Young Judaea and Hadassah were a part of her life for as long as anyone who knew her could remember. Her passion for Zionism and Jewish life were obvious to all who knew her. In a life which saw the attempted destruction of Jewish Europe, the birth of Israel and the election of her son to the office on New York City Mayor, one of her most treasured memories was a trip to Israel shared with her daughter Marjorie and son.
For years Judaeans have been able to attend Tel Yehudah through the generosity of the Charlotte Bloomberg scholarship endowment fund, and her legacy of love for our movement will continue through these gifts.
Howard Kleinert - A lifelong Judaean, active in clubs at Tel Yehudah 1968-1972 and a member of Year Course 1972-1973, Howard succumbed to melonoma on May 26, 2011. Howard was an e-learning specialist at IBM, consulting on both nationwide and international projects. He is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Beth; adoring daughter, Heather; loving in-laws, Joy and Herb Schiller, and caring brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Susie Schiller. He will be sorely missed by his large number of dear and longstanding friends. Donations may be made to NYU Cancer Institute - Melanoma Research.
May the families of those who have been taken be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Young Judaea family are with them.
