Social Action Notes
Extend Unemployment Benefits! Tell Congress: Don't Carve Up Social Security
A personal note from SoCal Arbeter Ring director Eric Gordon: Above you see the titles of two of our Social Action items from the last couple of weeks. The news from Washington and from many parts of the country can be pretty scary and depressing, but it our job as progressives (the Left, radicals, liberals, whatever), NOT to get discouraged, because that is not a helpful response. It only plunges us deeper into despair, inaction, or escapism.
Let's face it: Our country is ailing badly. We are a society riven by vicious class warfare on working people (not to put too fine a point on it). Simplistic militaristic, "faith-based" solutions of the Right are not the answer. We need a large, organized, conscious body of citizens to take clear, positive, forward-looking, bold, optimistic, creative action. For the very salvation of our country, and indeed the world (without getting all messianic about it), I hope that each of you will resolve in 2011 to up the ante of your activism, keep it up every day, talk to others, demonstrate, petition, vote. The job of freedom is never-ending and cannot be left to others.
We here in California have an opportunity we dare not squander. Our state bucked the national trend in the 2010 mid-term election by voting in a statewide Democratic slate. This is the test to see if Democrats indeed make a difference. If so, California can be a model for the rest of the country, leading the way out of the Recession through fresh and humane approaches to the jobs question, homelessness, prison reform, healthcare, education, tax policy, and so much more.
*** Take a Stand Against Homophobic Bullying! All readers of this bulletin surely share our sadness and outrage that this fall six teenage boys took their own lives due to homophobic bullying and harassment. The loss of a single life is cause for heartbreak. Six teen suicides in such a short time is a crisis. This is a wake-up call that something must change and that the Jewish community must not remain silent.
Please see the pledge some of our members have just signed - http://www.jewishcommunitypledge.org/ - and sign on if you wish to make this public commitment. Send a message to everyone in our communities that we will not stand by in the face of suffering and injustice. Our goal is to gather 18,000 pledges by the end of the calendar year. This is a pledge we are asking of all Jewish community members, youth and adults, so please forward widely.

SOCIALISM AT THE MOVIES: A Film Series and Forum
The new DSA local in Los Angeles (in formation) invites you to a film series and forum (a viewing and in-depth discussion) on issues of importance to progressives.
All showings will be on Friday nights, 8 - 10 p in Westwood. There is no admission charge. Check in time is 7:45 p.
The first film in the series is Fri, Dec 3:
Harlan County, USA
Director Barbara Kopple's film about the 1973 coal miners' strike in Harlan County, Ky, won a Best Documentary Oscar and was selected for the National Film Registry. Highlighting the struggles of families living in shacks with no indoor plumbing and enduring hazardous working conditions, the film details the conflict between the Eastover Mining Co. and the laborers determined to join the United Mine Workers of America.
In the discussion, we will respond to this film and also relate the events depicted to recent mining incidents in the United States and elsewhere and to significant developments in the labor movement generally.
Kick-off Discussant
Kyle Arnone, associated with the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. His interests involve the strategy of union organizing. He has worked as a research and strategy developer for the Teamsters Union and he is currently focusing on port truck drivers on the California waterfront.
Series Moderator
Jack Rothman, Professor Emeritus, UCLA School of Public Affairs and Author of Hollywood in Wide Angle: How Directors View Filmmaking.
RSVP at dsalosangeles@cox.net. Because of space limitations of a private home venue, the first 25 responders will be able to participate in this event. They will receive an email acknowledgement and information about the location of the showing. We will not be able to admit anyone not having a reservation. For further info, contact Jack Rothman at 310.470.5003.
