Avek in der eybikayt
We are saddened to report the death of AR member Dr. Sidney Smith, a renowned pediatrician, who for many years brought his whole extended family to our annual Seder. He sang in both of our choruses. We extend our condolences to his widow, AR member Gloria Smith, and to his family. May his memory always serve as a source of comfort.

A memorial tribute has been received from Ruth Weiss in memory of her mother, Fannie Levin. We are most grateful for the tsedoke.

Extend Unemployment Benefits!
Here's some scary news: Millions of America's unemployed job-seekers will be cut off from federal jobless benefits starting Nov 30 unless Congress takes urgent action to renew and extend those benefits through 2011.

For administrative reasons, states actually need to shut down their extended unemployment programs in advance of the federal government's Nov 30 cut-off, which means some people will be spending Thanksgiving without food on the table unless Congress acts next week (and they're only in town for a few days).

Here's a link to an emergency petition, and the deadline for signatures is Monday. Can you add your name, too? Just click here:

Tell Congress: Don't Carve Up Social Security

The Co-Chairs of the National Fiscal Commission have proposed carving up Social Security like a Thanksgiving turkey. They want to increase the retirement age to 69, making us work longer, deeply cut benefits for working people, and reduce annual Cost of Living Adjustments. We need your help to stop them!

Join thousands of Americans in a National Call Congress Day on Tues, Nov 30.

CAN WE COUNT ON YOU?

We need you to SAVE THE DATE - Tuesday, November 30 to TELL CONGRESS: DON'T CUT OUR SOCIAL SECURITY!

Social Security is a promise that must not be broken-we've worked hard for it and paid taxes for it all throughout our working lives. It belongs to all of us sitting around the Thanksgiving dinner table.

The number to call is 1-866-529-7630. (This phone number is not live yet, you must wait until the big call-in day!)

Call your United States Senators and your Representative. Tell them not to cut your Social Security. Help ensure that Social Security will be there for your children and your grandchildren.

After you've marked your calendar, please forward this e-mail and tell your friends, family and co-workers to add their voice and participate in the National Call Congress Day on Tuesday, November 30. Don't let politicians in Washington cut OUR Social Security!

P.S. If you don't act, Congress will assume you don't mind your Social Security benefits being carved up like a turkey.

SOCIALISM AT THE MOVIES: A Film Series and Forum

The new DSA local in Los Angeles (in formation) invites you to a film series and forum (a viewing and in-depth discussion) on issues of importance to progressives.

All showings will be on Friday nights, 8 - 10 p in Westwood. There is no admission charge. Check in time is 7:45 p.

The first film in the series is Fri, Dec 3:

Harlan County, USA

Director Barbara Kopple's film about the 1973 coal miners' strike in Harlan County, Ky, won a Best Documentary Oscar and was selected for the National Film Registry. Highlighting the struggles of families living in shacks with no indoor plumbing and enduring hazardous working conditions, the film details the conflict between the Eastover Mining Co. and the laborers determined to join the United Mine Workers of America.

In the discussion, we will respond to this film and also relate the events depicted to recent mining incidents in the United States and elsewhere and to significant developments in the labor movement generally.

Kick-off Discussant

Kyle Arnone, associated with the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. His interests involve the strategy of union organizing. He has worked as a research and strategy developer for the Teamsters Union and he is currently focusing on port truck drivers on the California waterfront.

Series Moderator

Jack Rothman, Professor Emeritus, UCLA School of Public Affairs and Author of Hollywood in Wide Angle: How Directors View Filmmaking.

RSVP at dsalosangeles@cox.net. Because of space limitations of a private home venue, the first 25 responders will be able to participate in this event. They will receive an email acknowledgement and information about the location of the showing. We will not be able to admit anyone not having a reservation. For further info, contact Jack Rothman at 310.470.5003.
