| Yiddish Happenings |
1) CIYCL is hosting a Showcase of Yiddish Culture on Sun Nov 7 at 2 p, at 8339 W. 3rd St, Los Angeles. The speaker is Bracha Weingrad from Jerusalem, with her new book The Yiddish Family Cookbook. Admission is $5 for CIYCL members, $8 general, free for full-time students. To RSVP contact: Miriam@yiddishinstitute.org or call 310.745.1190. 2) It's time for a HULYANKE Sat Nov 6 at 7:30 p at the home of AR members Rhoda & Israel Kachuck, 5166 Avenida Hacienda, Tarzana, phone 818.654.9960. Bring a nigndl (tune), a fraynd (friend), a mayse (story), a nosh (nosh) or any songs in Yiddish you'd like to share. The HULYANKE is an informal song swap and sing along. We have song sheets which we'll pass out, talk about where the song came from, what it means, argue about how to pronounce the Yiddish, and, sing and play (guitars, mandolins, sometimes a violin or other instrument), and enjoy a range of Jewish (mostly) folksongs. Songs from the Yiddish labor poets, lullabies, holiday songs and love songs. For some it evokes the memories of kindershule or camp. For others it's a chance to learn old and more recent Yiddish songs and get familiar with the language. For more information and to RSVP (appreciated) contact Lenny Potash at 323.665.2908 or LennyPotash@gmail.com. Please feel free to bring a nosh or drink to share.
