LAWRENCE BUSH
editor of the flagship progressive secular magazine Jewish Currents, leading a
provocative discussion: The Ambivalent Jew: Progressive Politics
& Jewish Identity Weds, Oct 6 at 7 p Arbeter Ring (Workmen's
Circle) 1525 S. Robertson Blvd / Los
Angeles, CA 90035 Do you feel a tension between
affirming your Jewish identity and affirming your humanism? Does the Israeli
Occupation make you want to become a Unitarian? Lawrence Bush will lead a
discussion of the forces that both attract and repel progressive Jews from
Jewish life and Jewish affirmation.
Lawrence
Bush is "an atheist who has nevertheless worked
intimately in Jewish religious institutions" as a writer and editor for much of
his adult life. His work has appeared in Tikkun,
Mad Magazine, The New York Times, and The
Village Voice, and many other publications. His newest book is Waiting for God: The Spiritual Explorations of
a Reluctant Atheist (Ben Yehuda Press). Suggested donation: $10 or better yet, purchase a subscription to Jewish Currents ($18). No one will be turned away for lack of ability to pay. | Boycott Hyatt! | Here is a letter from the Jewish Labor Committee:
Dear Friends in Jewish, Labor and Civic Organizations: The
union that represents restaurant and hotel workers, Unite Here Local
11, has implemented a boycott against area Hyatt hotels. Accordingly, we
request that you honor Unite Here Local 11's current boycott of Hyatt
hotels in our area, especially the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Century
City, Hyatt Andaz West Hollywood, and the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. Workers at these hotels have been without a contract for over eight
months. Workloads have become unreasonably heavy in Hyatt hotels.
Without proper safety standards, we're seeing unprecedented worker
injuries at hotels nationwide. Hotel workers suffer the highest rates of
industrial injury - more than miners and firefighters. Why should it be
more dangerous to make beds than to fight a raging fire? We must send a strong message to Hyatt hotels and those who choose to exploit working women and men. Please honor this boycott by not booking your events at Hyatt hotels, pulling out and changing venues if you have an event booked at one, and not attending
any events at these hotels. The Jewish Labor Committee pulled our
annual fundraising brunch from the Hyatt Century Plaza this summer and
held it at a union-friendly venue. We'll be happy to assist you in
relocating to an appropriate union venue. An updated boycott list and more information can be found at www.unitehere11.org/In solidarity, Floyd Glen-Lambert, Pres., JLC Western Region Leslie Gersicoff, Exec. Dir., JLC Western Region |

Social Action Notes 1) The 50 Most Influential Progressives of 20th-Century America This remarkable and enjoyable story in The Nation magazine reminds us of our greatest leaders of social change, a
true Progressive Leaders History of the United States. The author is Peter Dreier, who deserves
kudos for great scholorship, timeliness and accessibility, and he's a member of our Branch 1016 of Arbeter Ring! Enjoy!
2) Park51: Sermons and Essential Observations Our Br. 1016 AR Life Member Rabbi Haim Dov Beliak has posted a compilation of High Holiday sermons and observations about the controversy over the Park51 Muslim community center near Ground Zero. If you are concerned about freedom of speech and religion in the U.S. and are ready to be awed and heartened by the number and quality of sermons that this discussion has inspired, please go to http://www.jewsonfirst.org/10a/sermons.aspx. 3) Vote on Nov 2! We urge all our members and friends to get active in the midterm elections coming up November 2. There are critical issue st stake for the future and it makes a big difference who our elected officials are and what propositions win or lose!
4) The new opera Il Postino gets two free outdoor screenings The new opera Il Postino, by Mexican Jewish composer Daniel Catan, has been widely hailed as a modern masterpiece. Treating an episode in the life of Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda, and based on the novel by Antonio Skarmeta and the 1994 film Il Postino, it is highly accessible, humorous and profoundly wise to the ways of love and friendship, politics and art. The Los Angeles Opera will screen its current production at the California Plaza in Downtown L.A., on Grand Ave. bet. 3rd and 4th streets, this Sat Oct 9 at 7:30 pm, and at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa on Mon Oct 11 at 7 pm. Be prepared for a possibly cool evening, but go see it! It's free!
5) Blood Drive in San Gabriel ValleyTemple Beth David of the San Gabriel Valley is proud to announce a blood drive with Cedars-Sinai on Sun Dec 5, from 9:30 am - 2:30 pm in the social
hall. The site is located at 9677 Longden Ave. in Temple City, CA 91780 and the phone number is 626.287.9994. Our Life Member Steve Klein reminds us that the date is the 5th day of Khaneke, when it is typical to
exchange gifts. Says Steve, "I know our members will be delighted to give the gift
of life, especially during this season."

Avek in der eybikayt Ben Horowitz, 1914-2010
Ben was a member of YPSL, the Young People's Socialist League, the Socialist Party, and a lifelong Arbeter Ring member and leader. A cultured and gentlemanly activist, he served for many years as CEO of the City of Hope, which AR members had founded in the second decade of the 20th century as a refuge for free medical care for victims of tuberculosis. Ben vastly increased the activities and scope of City of Hope during his long tenure, transforming it into a professionally administered, modern medical research and treatment institution. He leaves his wife Beverly and a number of children and grandchildren. The funeral will be at the TaNaCH Chapel, Mount Sinai Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills, on Fri Oct 9 at 12 noon. |
