Development Finance in Agriculture Workshop 
 
Agbiz, The Banking Association of South Africa and the South African Insurance Association will be hosting a Development Finance in Agriculture Workshop in Pretoria on Friday, 19 October 2012 in the Auditorium of the Grain Building, Witherite Road, The Willows, Pretoria. 
  
The Agriculture Development Finance Workshop aims to bring together the major role players and stakeholders in the broader agriculture industry to share experiences and opportunities, to note barriers and constraints, and to develop a creative way forward for developing agriculture to grow significantly in South Africa.   
 
Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan will be opening the workshop with a keynote address.

Important Government Notice on AgriBEE verification for Import and Export Permits


Baltic Freight IndexImporters and exporters of agricultural products are urgently advised to peruse the linked Government Notice, dated 19 July 2012. To in future acquire import and export permits, traders will be compelled to submit their AgriBEE scorecards.
 
In terms of import permits, also peruse Government Gazette Notice 748 of 2012 on 'Application for Market Access Permits for Agricultural Products'.
 
In order to fulfil South Africa's commitment under the WTO's Marrajkesh agreement regarding market access, market access permits will be issued for the products specified in the Table of Import arrangements and under the conditions set out in the schedule.

Revised B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice launched 
  

Minister R DaviesOn Tuesday the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, launched and unveiled the Revised B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice.  The presentation by the Minister on the revised Codes is linked for your information and perusal. The Codes will be gazetted shortly for a 60-day public comment period. The new  detailed draft Codes of Good Practice will be distributed as soon as they are gazetted.

1st EU-South Africa Business Forum

Brussels, 17 September 2012

 

On 17 September 2012, the first EU-South Africa Business Forum took place in Brussels. The forum aimed at bringing together high-level representatives from business and politics to enhance bilateral dialogue on trade and investment related issues and to complement the 5th EU-South Africa Summit of political leaders that took place the day after.  

 

The forum adopted a Joint Business Declaration with business recommendations for three major fields of cooperation: trade and investment, infrastructure and skills development and job creation. With regards to bilateral trade and investment, the declarationrecognises the importance of agriculture, by pointing out that "agribusiness plays a vital role in the economic development of both trading partners, especially for South Africa". The reference to agriculture was obtained through direct contacts with the organisers of the event while providing input in the preparation process. More»
