A NOTE FROM THE TEAM CAPTAIN

When you meet our son Nick, you will undoubtedly walk away from him laughing. His sense of humor and zeal for life are irrepressible and nearly impossible to resist. His vivid personality makes it easy to forget that in the early 90s Nick was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis. He has dealt with the debilitating effects of this disorder ever since.

Nick has multiple brain and spinal cord tumors as well as thousands of tumors throughout his body. Nick has soldiered through doctors' visits, surgeries, MRIs, x-rays, CAT scans, Nerve conduction studies, physical therapy, brain tumors, spinal cord tumors, multiple plexiform tumors, curvature of the spine, learning disabilities, large motor delays, back braces, leg casts and bone deformities. And, yet, his humor and passion remain unrelenting.

There are 100,000 people in the United States who also suffer with NF and its effects. The Children's Tumor Foundation and the NF Endurance Team have helped our family and the families of many other NF sufferers as they have coped with this disorder. After feeling hopeless and helpless for many years, the Endurance Team provided and continues to provide our family with a way to make a difference through fund raising and awareness about NF. In fact, both the Children's Tumor Foundation and the Endurance Team program are funding worldwide clinical trials and studies to cure NF.

Without a cure, surgery is the only option. Because of the location of Nick's tumors, even this option is unavailable and many other NF patients share his plight. This is why we need YOUR help.

If you are a runner or walker looking for a marathon family, consider the NF Endurance Team and in particular the Myrtle Beach BI-LO Marathon on Feb. 14, 2009. Please join us at Myrtle Beach for the best of everything -- pasta dinner at Planet Hollywood, finish line booth with food, energetic and friendly people, beautiful beaches and most importantly, our purpose, to find a cure for NF!

NF HERO
Carson Rowe
My wife Marci and I first noticed some brown spots on our son, Carson, about a year ago. We thought they were birth marks or freckles but my wife noticed that they got bigger. Marci searched the Internet about the spots. That was the first time either of us heard of cafe-au-lait spots.

Marci then took Carson to the pediatrician. The pediatrician told her about NF which we had found on the Internet. We were referred to Mecklenburg Neurology where we were told that Carson had a 54 percent chance of having NF. We recently took Carson to get an eye exam and God blessed us with a positive outcome. The doctor said that his eyes looked perfect. We are now waiting on the hospital to call so that an appointment for an MRI can be made.

We are not looking forward, but we are praying for the same outcome. We have been researching NF. We were brought to the reality of the situation when Marci saw a video on youtube.com showing the different experiences that a girl named Carly had had with NF. When I watched her videos, which were posted by her mother, I realized how serious this disease is and I knew we needed to help find a cure. That is when I found the NF Endurance Team on the Children's Tumor Foundation Web site. I look forward to being a part of the team and helping in the fight against NF.
