Rev. Scott Spence at Mahanaim UMC 5-30-12
Rev. Scott Spence is pastor at Mahanaim United Methodist Church (pictured) and Blackwell Chapel UMC, both in Meadowview, Va.

From burn survivor to pastor
"Almighty God, don't let me die. Not like this."

Scott Spence was a 25-year-old welder when he was scalded in a job accident that left him with little chance of survival.

Today, he's the pastor of two growing congregations in Abingdon District that are thriving on softball, volleyball, and helping their neighbors.

A survey of 2,000 active United Methodist pastors found they get more exercise and comparable sleep compared to their U.S. peers, but they still have more health problems.
