FROM PLAIN TO MOUNTAIN
New missionary arrives from Nebraska
to tackle poverty in Big Stone Gap District

The Rev. Koni Purscell's accent (or lack thereof) doesn't sound anything like the Virginia pastor who's carrying in 50-pound bags of seed potatoes and dumping them at her feet.

But a few days after her April 1 arrival, she already seems to fit in the Big Stone Gap District and the cramped old house that serves as an office.

Purscell is Holston's newest Church and Community Worker, whose job is to address the staggering poverty found in the Big Stone Gap District.

"I find myself treading lightly," says the pastor from Nebraska. "I love the mountains, but I don't understand the coal-mining culture."

Purscell follows Nancy Hobbs, whose legacy is described by District Superintendent Archer Coppedge. Following Purscell in Nebraska is a familiar face from Holston: Randy Hildebrant of Jubilee Project.

Holston Conference offered its first storm training session for Volunteers in Mission teams on Saturday, May 14, at First Pulaski United Methodist Church.

Bishop James Swanson has issued a video appeal asking United Methodists to pray, give financially, and send work teams to future training sessions offered in response to devastating April storms throughout the southeast.

Moon over Galax, Va. 5-18-11
On his way to preach in Galax, Va., Bishop James Swanson makes a sobering stop in storm-ravaged Glade Spring.

"That evening after I retired to the hotel, I thought about Glade Spring and Bishop's Chapel in contrast. I was struck by the fact that in both places, God was present if we could but see God's hands."

Morristown District church represents Holston on 'Change the World' weekend

The denomination promoted "Change the World" weekend for many months, but many communities in Holston were already involved in graduations, weddings, or storm-recovery work.

A small church in Morristown District didn't let their busy schedules stop them from making an impact.
