Holston learned that two more church members had lost their lives in April tornadoes, bringing the count to five.
Meanwhile, conference leaders rushed to develop a response plan that best served the region, while churches and individuals didn't wait for details but stepped up to help their own communities and neighbors in need.
"It seems from time to time, we here in American become complacent about our direction and focus and forget what the meaning and definition of community is," said the Rev. Joe Crockett, pastor of Piney Grove United Methodist Church in Cleveland District.
"And then events, such as the disaster we all seem to have shared this past week, descend and nudge us awake. We have, I believe, all been touched one way or another."
