SORROW AND SADNESS:
Holston wakes from weather nightmare |
|
While tending to their own damaged churches and shattered communities, people across the Holston region immediately began to organize relief efforts for victims of storms wracking the southeast on April 27. Violent weather claimed at least 33 lives in Tennessee, including three members of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Greeneville. In addition to Greeneville and Apison, Glade Spring was also brutalized. Three of eight deaths reported in Virginia occurred in the Abingdon District community near Emory & Henry College. Numerous churches and properties were damaged, including Camp Lookout near Rising Fawn, Ga. Bishop James Swanson expressed his "sorrow and sadness" for the 899-church region he oversees in North Georgia, East Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia. "The Holston Conference Disaster Response Team is on standby to offer assistance in cooperation with local authorities," he said. |
