Keeping It Fresh: The 10 Apps You Can't Live Without

With smartphones, tablets, and the cloud, our lives are becoming much more organized, paperless, and light (as in weight).

Following are 10 apps you can't live without for your professional self.

  1. XMind (free). If you're a brainstormer and like to outline your thoughts visually, this app is for you. It mirrors some very expensive desktop software that is used in creative companies, but this one is free. At that price, it's worth checking out.
  2. TripIt (free, $3.99 for upgraded features). If you don't have a Patti Knight (aka work husband), and you travel quite a bit, you need TripIt. It organizes all of your businesses trips, including your flight information, hotel address, confirmation, and directions, and your rental car confirmation. It even syncs with your calendar.
  3. iPing (app: free, cradle: $30). OK. We don't know if this is one you really can't live without, but if you golf, it's probably worth a review. It helps with your putting game. Seriously. You load the app and attach your phone to your golf club and it will critique your short game.
  4. JotNot ($1.99). Finally a way to scan, organize, and share important documents and receipts straight from your phone. All you do is use the app and your phone's camera to capture the information in a digital format.
  5. GroupMe (free). Ever have a need to conference in many people at once from your smartphone and you drop the call or it won't go through? This app makes group chat or conference calling easy, even for the phone challenged.
  6. Trapster (free). Oh this is a good one! This app will tell you where the road hazards and SPEED TRAPS are on the route you're taking from meeting to meeting.
  7. Kindle App (free). If you don't already have the Kindle app on your phone and/or iPad, do it now. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Just get this app. It allows you to download books immediately so you don't have to lug them around on flights and through airports. You don't have to have a Kindle to use it. It's available for every smartphone and Apple product. Just do it.
  8. Evernote (free). We love Evernote because it allows us to share meeting notes without sending attachments back and forth. Everything is saved in the cloud so, with a simple user name and password, you can access your files from any device. This is especially good if your computer is out of juice or you forgot to grab the files off your desk. Now you have access from anywhere, anytime.
  9. Brain Challenge ($4.99). In those downtimes when you have a few minutes to kill, but not enough time to do any work, Brain Challenge provides puzzles, games, and other brain-inducing workouts.
  10. Dropbox (free). For the same reason you should use Evernote, Dropbox keeps all your files in the cloud so you can access them from any device. Gone is the server and VPN access. Hello cloud!

There are probably hundreds of apps you can't live without, but this gives you a good, and manageable, start.

Quick Tip: New LinkedIn Features

There is an interesting development going on at LinkedIn. They are

launching two new features: Targeted updates and follower statistics.

Targeted updates allow companies to segment their followers, just like you can do both on Facebook and Google+.

With targeted updates, you can create lists by industry, job function, company size and geography. Then you'll be able to set updates and discussions to specific groups.

Let's say you've just attended a trade show and you came back with

a stack of business cards. You invite each of the people who gave

you a card to connect with you on LinkedIn, put them in a list, and then you can send them valuable information, content and updates based on discussions you had at the show. It keeps you top-of-mind and allows you to keep warm leads in the middle of the sales and marketing funnel, where most people begin to make purchase decisions.

They also are launching follower statistics, which is an analytics

dashboard that allows companies to see how effective their updates

have been.

So, using the same example as above, you have the people you met at a trade show in a list, you're sending them information they find valuable and you're engaging with some of them. Now you'll be able to see who's reading, who's engaging and who's not interested. You want to find those not interested and cull them out so you're spending your time only with those who are interested in doing business with you.

Right now the features are available only to a handful of companies,

but they will soon hit your account
