Dorchester Flashback
Upham's CornerDorchester Illustration of the Week
Today's illustration is of Upham's Corner.

"Today's postcard of Upham's Corner postmarked Nov. 11, 1911, shows a scene looking from the southwest along Columbia Road toward the northeast toward the actual Upham's Corner intersection. The building on the right is the Baker Memorial Church Methodist Church at the corner of Cushing Avenue, now the site of a parking lot. The Church was opened in 1891.

You will want to know about an interactive walking tour of Upham's Corner taking place this Saturday, Oct. 17th, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, starting at the Strand Theatre, 543 Columbia Road."
The Illustration of the Day is brought to us by the Dorchester Atheneum, if you would like to be added to the list, please contact Earl Taylor by email or call 781-272-6700.
SCI Dorchester Welcomes New Americorps Members
As a way of introducing the new AmeriCorps members, each week we will be featuring a biography of a new member. Our featured new member this week is Scotland Huber.

Scotland Huber, though not a native New Englander, has made his home here since 2005. Graduating from Gordon College, Wenham, MA in the spring of 2009 with a B.A. in Philosophy, he is excited to join DotWell as a member of SCI Dorchester. Scot's main responsibilities will lie with updating the weekly eblast, photographing events, providing design and blog posts for the website, and helping recruit volunteers and reaching out to the community. Scot has previously volunteered at Greater Boston Food Bank and various service organizations in Philadelphia (his native city), as well as serving as a Resident Advisor, Student Ministry Leader, and Photographer at Gordon College. He is excited to be a part of DotWell and SCI's vision for healthier lifestyles and community involvement, especially here in Dorchester.

Turn $10 into $1000 for Young Leaders
Please DONATE OCTOBER 14th after 3pm to help SCI win America's Giving Challenge through Causes on Facebook! Your $10 or more could help SCI win the daily challenge ($1,000) or possibly the overall challenge ($50,000).  This contest is based on the number of individual donations received for our cause, Building Community Leaders, not the total amount of money received.  Click on the following link and make a donation by 3 p.m. on Thurs. Oct. 15th, to help us win:  http://apps.facebook.com/causes/367033

Your donation to this Cause will help SCI train 220 young leaders to collaborate effectively, make connections, bridge differences and nurture social networks to make a difference.  With your help, these youth leaders will tackle issues they are passionate about such as hunger, teen violence, and the environment.
SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.

The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center - to provide integrated clinical and community services that address health disparities, build social capital, and meet the complex needs of our communities.
