Welcome to the new RD Connections Newsletter
The Newsletter for Resource Development Updates

Hello my friends.  I am Atul Tandon, Executive Director, International Network and Executive Vice President, Investor Relations at United Way Worldwide.  We hope you will enjoy our newsletter, RD Connections, and find that the strategies and best practices will both educate and motivate you and your volunteers.   Our goal is to highlight individuals, organizations and ideas that have proven successful.   We also hope you will let us know about your successes so they can be shared as well.   One of the great benefits of being part of the United Way family is that we can learn from one another.

This is a time of great challenges and opportunities for United Way.   We are losing donors at an alarming rate.   The traditional manufacturing and financial service industry base that has been the bedrock of United Way workplace campaigns is shrinking or in economic upheaval.  Indeed, we seem to be working much harder for fewer dollars.

But out of these challenges come opportunities.   We are re-engineering the workforce and learning how to build relationships directly with the employees rather than relying exclusively on the gatekeeper.  Promising work has been done to develop a robust individual engagement platform so we can attract, retain and grow support from individuals.   We are also taking a longer-term perspective of donors placing greater importance on life time relationships and ultimate legacy gift.

So please take a moment and read our newsletter.   Tell us what you think.   Above all, let us know if you have a story to tell.  We'd love to share the news!

New source of contributions may generate 8% of your revenue

What importance would you place on a new source of income that generates eight percent or more of your contributions?  According to Giving USA, charities nationwide receive eight percent of their donations annually from bequests.   Are you receiving your share?  Bequests typically come from donors who were loyal but modest annual contributors.   They were never on your major gifts prospect lists and you knew very little, if anything, about them.   So how do you market bequests to prospects with this profile?

The United Way Planned Giving Service Center is a way local United Ways can reduce the cost of marketing bequests and increase their results.   Through a collaborative approach, United Ways can share costs and expertise bringing opportunities not possible on their own.

Presenting the Principal Gifts Guidebook
Principal Gifts Guidebook imageThe Principal Gifts Guidebook was premiered at the Staff Summit in Washington, DC in March, 2010.  The purpose of the guidebook is to help local United Ways understand the risks and benefits of embarking on a principal gifts program and to provide the tools to get started. It brings together the principles of product development, relationship management and consultative selling to leverage the success of annual major gifts programs to build multi-year principal gift proposals.  The outcome of a successful principal gifts program is that it will provide the fuel to launch community impact strategies that will help your United Way reach its goals to provide the building blocks for a good life for all.

Four United Ways achieve 15% Tocqueville Legacy Circle challenge
The 2010 Fleur de Lis award dinner in April included recognition of four United Ways that have achieved the 15% Tocqueville Legacy Circle Challenge: United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County (NC), United Way of Sarasota County, Inc (FL), Rock River Valley United Way (IL), Sioux Empire United Way (SD).  Fifteen percent of their Tocqueville Society membership have endowed (or perpetuated) their annual Tocqueville gifts.  Congratulations to these forward-thinking United Ways!

The 15% Tocqueville Legacy Circle Challenge is a five-year (2009-2013) initiative designed to encourage United Ways and their staff and volunteer leadership to actively grow their Tocqueville Legacy Circle program.  A strong and growing Tocqueville Legacy Circle guarantees future income, provides financial stability and offers a great way for Tocqueville Society members to extend their impact in the community well into the future. View the customizable PowerPoint that makes the case for prioritizing growth of the Tocqueville Legacy Circle program and the 15% Tocqueville Legacy Circle commitment form.  Contact Louise Kenny for more info.
