Board Nominations Sought
McGovern Dear Members -

In preparation for presenting a slate of board nominees to the Board for election in October, a nominating committee led by Michael Holliday and Janet Garufis is being formed to recruit and screen candidates.  To start the selection process, Michael and Janet are requesting your assistance in identifying community, business, and non-profit leaders who should be considered for nomination.

Please assist in the selection process by emailing your list of board nominees to Marcia Reed by Friday, August 5 (marcia@sbchamber.org) and include the name of the organization with which the nominee is associated and the phone number if possible.

We currently have a board of 26 members but our bylaws provide for up to 32.  We are looking for nominees who can best represent the diversity of our community and are considered leaders in one of the following sectors:
·  Communications
·  Non-profit
·  Insurance
·  Medical
·  Architecture
·  Education
·  Law
·  Construction
·  Real Estate
·  Broadcasting
·  Publishing
·  Banking
·  Petroleum
·  Retail
·  Tourism
·  Accounting
·  Small Business

Selecting top-notch community leaders to serve on our board is key to understanding the needs of Chamber members and ensuring the Chamber continues to be our members most valuable business partner.

Thank you for taking time to forward your list of board nominees.  Your continued support is truly appreciated.

Respectfully,

Julie McGovern

Here is what people are saying about our Chamber of Commerce:

Many thanks, Marcia, for enabling SCORE to be a part of the EXPO!
You made this a constructive and easy to carry out experience . . and we were impressed by the crowds that were attracted.  And everybody's friendliness and manner.  We also appreciate the location that you assigned to us.  Overabundance of good food was the only problem since it jeopardized our diet . . but this is a nice challenge.
For all you did, many thanks . . Vic Cole for Santa Barbara SCORE

Steve, thanks again, so very much, for giving me your valuable time today.  We all have limited minutes on this earth, and I really appreciate your sharing some of yours with me.
And you gave me not merely time, but brilliant, studied insights.  My challenge is to be sure that whatever happens, I proceed with good information and truth on my side.Your expertise, life experience and wisdom will help me do that.
As I mentioned, it would be of great help if you could offer me the contact information of other community leaders you believe might speak with me, as well as leaders of other chambers in our region.
I only wish I had met you many years earlier so I could have absorbed more of your good sense.  Thanks again for meeting with me.

I recommend you call Steve Cushman, EVP for the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce.  The Business Leaders is pretty powerful.  I belong.  $2,000/year.  4 luncheons a year to promote yourself and business.  You could come as my guest.  Steve, might have some other ideas and venues, too.  Marcia Reed, is second in command and a great contact.  Both are "mover and shakers" who are really fun and with big hearts!

Visitor Center News

July was unusually cold but that did not keep visitors away, it was much busier than last year. We also saw visitors who originally were headed to The Gulf, but changed itineraries due to the oil spill. One small benefit from an otherwise terrible catastrophe. Blue Whales have been seen every day for the last few weeks! The Visitor Center has 10% discount coupons, www.condorexpress.com. Truth Aquatics also has day trips out to the islands, www.truthaquatics.com.   Here is a link to The Blue Whale Restoration Project at The Natural History Museum, www.sbnature.org.

Please visit Maritime Museum's great exhibit of Postcards from Paradise. This exhibit features some of the most iconic waterfront attractions from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The Visitor Center has "2 for 1 coupons", www.sbmm.org.
