Bone Marrow Registry Drive for Ramah Parent, Matt Fenster
Jennifer & Matt Fenster | The Fensters, a deeply committed Ramah family, need your help. Matt, Jennifer, and their four children spend summers at Ramah Berkshires and Nyack. He has worked endlessly to help his community in Riverdale, NY, and beyond. Matt was recently diagnosed with AML, acute myelogenous leukemia. He needs a bone marrow transplant to save his life and we are desperately searching for a marrow match for Matt. His family and friends are now calling on the Ramah community to assist in this time of need.
There are two opportunities to register as a potential bone marrow donor:
- Sunday, May 23 at the Salute to Israel Parade.
These drives are coordinated by the Gift of Life Foundation. Registration involves a simple cheek swab (adults age 18-60).
You can also make a contribution to the Matt Fenster Donor Circle to defray the costs of processing of the donor kits. Each donor kit costs $54 to process. The more kits collected and paid for, the better chance we will have of finding a bone marrow match for Matt. More information about this effort, including how to make a contribution can be found at www.mattfenstercircle.org. If you have already been tested, please consider donating $54 to cover the cost of someone else's test.
For more information or to volunteer to assist with this effort, please contact info@mattfenstercircle.org.

On Monday, May 17th, METNY United Synagogue convened the second seminar on the theme of preparing and "Conducting a successful High Holy Day Appeal". Representatives from Congregation Habonim in Manhattan, the North Shore Jewish Center in Port Jefferson, the Orangetown Jewish Center, Agudas Israel in Newburgh, and Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack met to hear Rabbi Aubrey Glazer and President Karen Goldstick of the JCC of Harrison describe their successful efforts this past year. Ms. Goldstick explained how she utilized her speech to galvanize support. Her speech which marked the first time in the JCCH's 50-year history that such an effort to engage the congregation's tzedakah contribution was attempted. Karen explained that the synagogue's board enthusiastically endorsed the campaign designed to bridge the financial deficit. Her theme focused on Jewish continuity and the synagogue's central place in sustaining Judaism. The planning and follow-up added to the success of their campaign. Rabbi Glazer followed by showing how his Kol Nidre drasha complemented the message and efforts of the president. He used three of the Yom Kippur "Al Het" - hardening of heart, confusion of heart, and scheming heart as his text and the need to repair our hearts, repair our marriages, and repair our relationship to the synagogue as his context. An incredible sermon for each attendee to hear. We heartily endorse this coordinated approach. The group discus sion with Karen and Rabbi Glazer opened an exciting exchange of ideas, experiences and best practices. Ideas that work include:
- giving your gift of last year plus 10%
- sending out pre-appeal letters
- involving the board to make calls wishing a Shana Tova and not asking for a commitment at the first call
- members of the board making a personal donation before calling congregants
- distributing envelopes as members arrived
- donate time if you cannot donate dollars
- and recognition by name in the bulletin were among the recommendations.
The May 17th program followed a similar evening at the Dix Hills Jewish Center on May 13, highlighted by a presentation by Lee Grebstein, DHJC campaign chairman.
The Leadership Series is coordinated by Norman Korowitz , METNY Executive VP and Rabbi Moshe Edelman, METNY Associate Director.

Yasher Koach Corner
Yasher Koach to Rabbi Irwin Huberman on his installation at Congregation Tifereth Israel, Glen Cove.
Yasher koach to the seventh-grade students who were inducted into METNY's Keter Torah Honor Society. This award is presented to congregational school students at the end of the seventh grade who demonstrated the highest standards of achievement, and who have exhibited commendable performance at least four out of the last five years of religious school. Ceremonies were held at Temple B'nai Sholom in Rockville Centre and at the Dix Hills Jewish Center, where these students' families and friends supported and cheered years of effort and dedication. Students from the following schools were inducted at the ceremonies: Bellmore Jewish Center Dix Hills Jewish Center East Meadow Jewish Center Feld-Rosenbaum Religious School Midway Jewish Center North Shore Jewish Center Plainview Jewish Center Temple B'nai Sholom, Rockville Centre Temple Beth Sholom, Roslyn Temple Beth Israel, Port Washington Temple Hillel Temple Israel of South Merrick We salute these schools, their students, their teachers and principals, and these students' families. The pride families took in their students' accomplishments was palpable, and it was clear that Jewish education will continue to be a priority for these students. Several students from around the district also received the Akiba Award at the same ceremonies. The Akiba Award goes to one student from each school, a student who has gone beyond their school's requirements, working diligently to achieve a "personal best" in Judaic studies, community service, and leadership.
