Eating Right When the Lights Go Out

Last summer Lake County residents were hit with three severe straight line wind storms that knocked down trees and power poles, and resulted in some significant power outages. Over the past few years we have seen a resurgence of whooping cough (pertussis) cases in our county and throughout Illinois. I am pleased to report that to address this growing concern the state of Illinois has implemented a new vaccination requirement for school entry. For school year 2012-2013, all students entering sixth and ninth grades will be required to provide proof of a dose of the whooping cough (Tdap) vaccination in addition to the school physicals required at these grades. Gurnee Park District Adds Limits on Tobacco |

Following presentations by REALITY Illinois teens about tobacco use, Gurnee Park District commissioners in April approved an ordinance prohibiting use of tobacco on or within 25 feet of any park district playground, sports field, skate park, shelter, or structure including areas around Viking Park Summer Kitchen, the band shell and at any park district outdoor event. REALITY Illinois teens are sponsored by the Health Department's Tobacco Free Lake County program. Grandwood Park Park District Board voted in January to go tobacco free after a presentation by the teens. |

Healthy Youth Active in Zion Area |

Healthy Youth teens from Zion-Benton Township High School continue working through the Health Department's Drug Free Communities program to improve the lives of young people. Teens recently provided a Real Deal program for about 200 youths and parents in which young people are given a sense of what life will be like at age 25 when they must balance salary and lifestyle choices.

Also, 29 members of the Healthy Youth group traveled to 11 businesses in Zion, Winthrop Harbor and Beach Park to distribute tags on alcohol containers and coolers as part of a Sticker Shock program reminding purchasers not to help underage youths gain access to alcohol. |
