Katie's Holiday Party Planning Tips

For most of us the holidays mean fuller calendars, fuller bellies, and emptier wallets. If you'd like to throw a festive party without taking out a loan or picking up a part time job, we've got just the plan for you!
Getting Started
The quandary of email vs. snail mail invitations. "Evite" and Facebook invitations are a quick and inexpensive method of spreading the word to all of your guests. However, an elegant touch that makes a great first impression with your guests is good old fashion mail. Try making creative postcard invitations printed at home to save money on envelopes and postage.
Eats
Set a budget and stick to it. Price out your meals ahead of time, trying to use similar ingredients in your appetizers and courses, sticking to what's in season to save money. A great trick is to purchase inexpensive cuts of meat and braise throughout the day with vegetables, parsley, mint, thyme, bay leaves and red wine or stock. Serve in elegant bowls or plates to add an extra panache. If you are hosting a potluck-style party, consider a theme in which you can ask guests to bring something small to contribute. It will make your party feel instantly pulled together.
Booze on a Budget
You can save big bucks and make a party memorable by creating a festive signature drink for the evening. Another great trick is to set-up a "Bubbly Bar" with different types of Prosecco (a less expensive substitute for Champagne) and juices for mixing. Make the juice yourself from condensed frozen mixtures and put out in fun pitchers.
Decorations
My entertaining motto: use what you've got! Old fabrics can be used as napkins or put together for a fun tablecloth. Make centerpieces with vases full of lemons or cracked ornaments. If you've decided to try a theme this year consider 'Winter Wonderland,' because winter means white, and white means cheap! Drape gently used white sheets across your tables and top with candles and glitter for an instant effect. A great catering tip: set-up phone books, paint cans and pots underneath to create risers for food trays.
My final tip: no matter the direction you want to take your party, remember that the holidays are about spending time with the ones you love, and not about how much you spend on them. Eat, drink and be merry!
