A Message from the General Manager

Kelvin Moore

Over the years I've attended dozens of seminars on management, leadership and customer service. There was one presentation in particular about 7 or 8 years ago that really stuck with me.  Although I forget the presenter's name (let's call him John), I remember his message clearly... "You've got to deliver Hot Fries!"

John told the story of a mobile hotdog stand outside of his hotel during a previous speaking engagement. He recalled observing the owner, an older gentleman in his 70's, and his 10 year old grandson, and how fascinated he was by what he saw. He observed the old man packing to-go orders of hot dogs and fries in brown paper bags, giving them to his grandson, and watching the boy run like the wind down the street. After watching this for a few days, he decided to go down to the stand and chat with them.

"So why do you run so fast to deliver these lunches?" John asked the boy. "Well Mr., when we first started delivering lunches, customers would tell me that they didn't like it when they got their lunches and the fries were cold," the boy explained. "So I decided that if I ran really fast, then the fries would still be hot when I delivered them." John smiled and said, "Man! You guys have figured out the key to success, haven't you?" The boy replied, "Well yeah... it's pretty simple. Everybody likes Hot Fries!"

Now John's version of the story was much more descriptive and entertaining, but his point was clear. The most successful business leaders have one thing in common... they are able to determine what it is that their customers want and how they want it, and they find a way to deliver it to them. During his presentation, he reiterated the point that our customers (event organizers and event attendees) each have their version of Hot Fries. His challenge to those of us in the audience was to figure out what our customers' Hot Fries were. It was a funny story, told in simple terms, yet it delivered a fundamental lesson that really hit home with me. From that moment on, I've continuously worked to incorporate John's Hot Fries message into my personal business philosophy.

We had a record year at the Lynnwood Convention Center in 2010, realizing the best fiscal results and highest customer service ratings in the facility's history. Although we made several technical and procedural changes to our operation over the last couple years that contributed to that success, what we really did was get back to the basics and focused on delivering Hot Fries. We recommitted ourselves to figuring out what our customers wanted and then we modified our operation accordingly. Based on our 2010 results, our customers (you) seem to have validated our Hot Fries approach.

So on behalf of the entire staff of the Lynnwood Convention Center, the Lynnwood PFD, and SMG, I'd like to thank you for being instrumental in our success in 2010. And I want to assure you that we will continue to focus on delivering Hot Fries ... just the way you want them.

Parsley, finely chopped, 1/2 bunch
Old Bay seasoning, 1 tbsp

Chef Michael

Caramelize onions in a hot pan with olive oil. Remove from pan and chill.

Drain artichoke hearts and chop fine. Squeeze excess water from crab and check for shells. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients thoroughly. There is a possibility that more breadcrumbs will be required, dependent upon the residual moisture of the crab and artichokes. Check seasoning and add salt and pepper if required. Fill a two inch baking dish with mixture and bake for 20 minutes covered and 20 minutes uncovered until hot throughout and evenly browned on top.

Serve with flat bread or crostinis.

Danielle's Party Planning Tips

Poker Night has come a long way since a guys' night at home. It's an exciting theme to spread throughout and requires little set up with virtually no hassle.

Poker is now a game for men and women of all ages. Casino party companies in the Snohomish County area take away any stress in trying to bring it to the masses for your event's entertainment element. These companies set and strike equipment and even give event planners the option to have professional dealers or train people from your group to be the dealer. Also, the casino party companies have programs setup with the mission of raising money for your charity/fundraiser.

While the casino party company sets up the entertainment; you now have a theme for the rest of the room. The invitations, A/V presentation, lighting, photo booth and table décor can all tie back to poker with virtually unlimited options found online and at local party stores.

Some local casino companies include Let It Ride Casino Parties based out of Renton or A Casino Event of Seattle.

Try a Poker Night event and you are bound to have a "made hand."
