EPA Issues New Rule to Identify Non-Hazardous Solid Waste Used in Combustion Units

A wide range of secondary materials are burned in boilers or industrial furnaces as a substitute for primary fuels, or as ingredients. EPA's Commercial and Industrial Solid Waste Incineration definitions rule excluded combustion units used to recover energy for a useful purpose were subject to the emissions standards for commercial, industrial, and institutional boilers rather than the emissions standards for solid waste incineration units. This rule was challenged and amended. >>>

In the course of conducting EHS audits, I have reviewed thousands of hazardous waste manifests and one of the most common mistakes I find is the incorrect use of the RQ designation in the shipping name. Sometimes it appears where it should not; often it is missing where it should have been included. Sure, it is a minor mistake, but it is entirely avoidable. Let's see how we can get it right. >>>

She has over 30 years environmental, health and safety management experience, including operational, management, industry and consulting experience in industries ranging from electronics to hazardous waste. While the Executive Director for EHS at Seagate Technologies, Sara directed Seagate's Corporate Social Responsibility Program, was Vice-President of the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition, and represented the United States Network of the United Nations Global Compact. She has utilized her Lean/Six Sigma training in diverse projects such as improving design cycle times and implementing more efficient training methods. Sara has regional and international EHS program management and compliance experience with Fortune 500 companies. She is an ISO 14001 Auditor, a California Registered Environmental Assessor, a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator and a Six Sigma Black Belt.

Barbara Ruble, Kathryn Nobrega, Melanie Powers-Schanbacher and Curt Johnson will be attending The Auditing Roundtable's (AR) "EHS Auditing in the 21st Century" conference to be held September 7-9, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Penn's Landing hotel in Philadelphia, PA. The conference schedule coincides with the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. The conference presentations and discussions will explore how the world has changed in the past 10 years and how environmental, health and safety programs have evolved to reflect risk management, sustainability and security concerns in the 21st Century. The meeting will include presentations on disaster planning and response, elements of an effective security program, managing risk through EHS audits, relevance of attorney-client privilege in a global world, and improving the efficiency of site audits through use of new technology. Popular small discussion groups on industry sectors and special interest topics will provide attendees with practical opportunities for peer benchmarking, information sharing, and exploring solutions to the challenges faced by 21st Century , Health & Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) auditors. A CEU training course entitled "Security - What's Required and How to Audit Compliance" will be offered on the evening of September 6, 2011.
