ASHREA Standard 188 - Prevention of Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems - to be finalized.
This new ASHRAE standard details the specific hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) process for implementing Legionella risk management and also identifies the higher risk buildings that need to implement this process. Standard 188 will apply to those commercial, industrial and institutional buildings with the following risk factors:
- multiple rooms or housing units supplied by one or more centralized hot water heaters;
- more than 10 stories high (including any levels that are below grade);
- all healthcare facilities;
- occupants who are immunocompromised individuals;
- one or more whirlpools and/or spas either within it or located on its premises;
- one or more aerosol-generating water features or devices (e.g., ornamental fountains, direct evaporative coolers, misters (atomizers), air washers or humidifiers) either within it or located on its premises; or
- the total halogen concentration of the incoming potable water supply to the building is less than 0.5 mg/L (0.5 ppm) as chlorine.
In October 2010, ASHREA posted the draft Standard for public comment and revisions were made during the Standard 188 Project Committee's January 2011 meeting. Standard 188 is expected to be finalized by mid-year 2011.
