T
rends and Market Statistics
that Lead Us to the Need for
Greater Leadership in OH Programs
  Trident Health Resources, Inc.
Provides Such Leadership.

 - By Ralph E. Jordan, CEO & President

It bears repeating and expanding from last month'se-newletter feature article that, along with changes and declines in the number of OH cases within a hospital, is the need for administrators to explore creative management of resources for best efficiencies.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

CABG cases have been declining for the past 24-36 months, implying certain financial risk or burdens for managers concerning program staffing, scheduling, and leadership.  In review of national statistical trends, the following is true: The number of CABG procedures increased from approximately 158,000 in 1992 to a peak of 190,000 in 1996 and then fell to 152,000 in 2003. The number of CABG hospitals increased steadily, from 891 in 1992 to 1,069 in 2003.  [SOURCE: Health Affairs 26, no. 1 (2007): 162-168].

But it is difficult to quantify or receive regular updates on these sorts of trends.  Administrators simply need to take a pulse of their own case volume to know what is happening and trust knowing when it becomes time to make any changes.

One analyst noted in a published paper that it's important to consider three important things and balance them: (1) the need for timely access to locally available care, (2) the need to maintain clinical expertise through adequate volumes, and, (3) the high costs of such programs (Source: Health Affairs 26, 2007).  Trident Health Resources, Inc. can offer help through the maze of these considerations.

Each Hospital's Open Heart program is unique and has special strengths and needs.  Trident understands this, which is why the past 21  years in business have been successful for us:  we don't treat our accounts with one magic bullet; rather, each client receives customized, specialized response from us.  Our approach is not unlike the perfusionist's "client-first" approach to his or her job:  When you operate a heart-lung machine, there is no "Auto Play" button... you fine tune every movement to the needs of the patient, first and foremost.  Trident takes this approach to its business management of all hospital accounts, too.

If you're a perfusionist or a hospital administrator or a supervising surgical services nurse, consider that your Open Heart program may benefit from a no-obligation cost comparison analysis from Trident.  Whether you are currently managing your own department and staffing or are currently using a third party contractor, allow Trident Health Resources, Inc. to review options for you.  Call us directly, or complete a short cost-comparison form on our website, located HERE. We'll get back with you promptly.

Hospitals urged to complete AHA survey
on economic downturn

AHA encourages all community hospital and long-term care hospital CEOs to complete by Aug. 28 a brief survey examining the impact of the economic downturn on hospitals. Emailed and faxed today to CEOs at both AHA-member and non-member facilities, the survey will help the association update Congress and the administration on the economy's impact on these hospitals. If the CEO of your hospital did not receive the survey, please contact AHA Member Relations at (800) 424-4301 to receive a user name and password to complete the survey online.
