| Greetings! |
Back by popular demand, we are happy to bring you a second serving of talks, workshops, and comments from the 2011 International Christian Science Nursing Conference held last September at the CedarS Camps in Lebanon, Missouri. The theme of the Conference was, "Walking Over the Wave". As many of us here in the United States are currently walking over the snow drifts, how wonderful it is to remember back to that special autumn gathering amid the colorful leaves reflected in the ripples of CedarS newest lake.
In this special edition of Vision Now! you can read a summary of a talk given by Leslie Pitts, Executive Manager and President of The Mary Baker Eddy Library about the early history of Christian Science nursing; enjoy a report from Caroleen Scholet, Manager of Christian Science Nursing Activities for The Mother Church; and gain insights from a workshop conducted by Christian Science nurses Tina Bilhorn and Jobea Lindley on "Walking Over the Wave of Sudden Needs".
So come and walk over the wave with us once again!
Lovingly,
Your CSNN Board

and receptivity to Truth and Love poured forth for mankind saying, "You are each the light, and the world is feeling the effects of the good works - of Love, wisdom, compassion, of the healing touch of the Christ."
She further stated: "In Science and Health we have the promise that 'the waters will be pacified, and Christ will command the wave.' (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures p. 570:24) How? - Christ commands the wave with the ideal truth, attributing all power to God
(see S&H 473:8). And as 'the true idea voicing good,'
(S&H p. 332:9). Christ is the authority - the comfort and reassurance we are looking for when it appears that there is a flood or huge waves to ride. Stay with Christ every step
of the way."
Caroleen then shared information on how and why to advertise as a Christian Science nurse: Read More ....

Highlights from a History of
Mary Baker Eddy and
Christian Science Nursing
by Lesley Pitts
| |
Mary Baker Eddy's words in Unity of Good speak to Jesus' example of walking over not into or with the waves of mortal thought.[i] But both Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy at some stage in their personal histories were buffeted by the waves and had to learn to rise above them and walk over them.
Eddy lived in an age where women were always called to nurse. If a child was sick or a relative, this was woman's work. In the years before her death, her own mother would be found caring for all of her children at one time or another. I found a letter from her sister, Martha, thanking her brother George and his wife, for nursing her through an illness. She wrote, "Never - never can I forget your kindness, which I do believe, was an important means in saving my life, for you not only 'smoothed the pillow,' but also soothed the mind, oppressed by misfortune and foreboding fears, . . . by your cheerful looks and still more cheering words."[ii] This was the type of nursing Mary was exposed to in her home.
In the beginning Eddy was the one needing the nursing assistance from her mother, siblings, Daniel Patterson, and Myra Smith, her housekeeper when she lived in North Groton. Here in her history we find her perhaps at the lowest point of her life. Who would have thought that from here she would persist and have the courage to go on to discover a healing method that would not only heal her but be replicated by others? The glimmer of light didn't come for her until her study of homeopathy showed her how powerful the mind was in a patient's recovery. Read More...

Workshop: Walking Over the
Wave of Sudden Needs
by Tina Bilhorn and Jobea Lindley
| |
The workshop began with singing! -- Hymn #58 from the The Christian Science Hymnal.
We then shared citations from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings that support a calm, uplifted, healing response to sudden needs:
Psalm 91
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
Isaiah 41:10
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Psalms 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalms 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God:
Matthew 14:29-31
And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Acts of the Apostles 20:7-12
And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.
Matthew 25:1-13
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Read More ...

Letter of Gratitude
from Joy Evans
|
Greetings to the CSNN Board of Directors!
God blesses your B I G hearts!
It occurred to me you may appreciate reading the letter I wrote recently to the Christian Science Trust in Canada. It has tidbits of the CSNN Conference of September in MO at CedarS Camps and could be considered fruitage! Feel free to use any of the information it if would help other Christian Science nurses e.g. encourage them to attend the next one.

Wayside House, BC, Canada

Much love and gratitude to ya'll. I had a lovely opportunity to do a "conference (feedback) presentation" workshop at my workplace, Wayside House at Victoria, BC Canada. Every staff person attended the afternoon event - even those "off duty" that day. And others came to work early to attend I was thrilled by the interest and we had a very happy time together. I believe eyes were opened, especially when I shared a DVD of CedarS Camps.
Lotsa love,
Canadian-style, to everyone. I still cherish all I experienced and learned.
Love, Joy
Excerpts from Joy's letter to the Christian Science Trust in Canada...
... gratitude ... continues to well up and overflow within me. Your practical Christian love and kindness enabled me to attend the 2011 International Christian Science Nursing Conference in Lebanon, Missouri at CedarS Camps. How deeply I cherish those precious memories of

spiritual inspiration and growth. I often hear myself singing "joyful songs to the Lord." (Golden Text of the Bible Lesson.) And striving to maintain and express an attitude of deep gratitude in my own practise of Christian Science Nursing and in my daily walk with divine Love. Wayside House, my employer, lovingly and willingly 'picked up the tab' for the rest of my expenses and sent me joyfully on my way with enough 'time off to savor every single moment from departure to arrival and back again to my post. How very blessed I am.
I found myself going deeper into its higher meaning and the implications of true spiritual buoyancy. Each talk, speaker and Christian Science workshop brought its own vision and perspective on how to maintain - i.e. reflect this mental attitude as a beautiful state of Mind. I especially loved the many references to Jesus walking on the water and also discovered them as follow-up in discussions in the Christian Science periodicals after the conference. I feel that these insights buoyed me up during the many hours of flying back home (often over the waves of the ocean!) They are immediately applicable to Christian Science Nursing. With it comes the sweet sense of the conference blessings "coming full circle", embracing my nursing, moment by moment.
One small example:
"When Jesus walked on the water, he wasn't being taken in by the stormy sea. His understanding of God's goodness and total control of creation kept him above the storm and the fear. Jesus relied on God's ever-present law of Good. Instead of falling for the fear factor, he demonstrated his oneness with Spirit, which guided his actions and freed him from fear in every instance". (Surely, as much is expected of a Christian Science nurse with his/her patients.) Stressing the importance of vision, the article continues: "As we understand God and His omnipotent goodness, our prayers will have more conviction and we will see more clearly that God is "a very present help' to anyone in trouble." tian Science Sentinel).
YES! I had a wonderful healing during a workshop on care of children. The Christly love flowing from one of the Christian Science teachers melted completely and instantly some fear andresentment I had been experiencing prior to the Conference. Totally awesome. I felt like new - rebirth!
The Conference topic "Walking Over the Wave" became a real eye-opener for me. ... How our dear country(ies) needs the tender healing touch of the Christ through Christian Science Nursing. For I learned that Christian Science nursing is a model for the world!! WOW!
Much love,
Joy Evans
