United Methodist Student  Day, one of the six churchwide Special Sundays of The United Methodist Church, is Sunday, November 28. Money for UM scholarships and loans comes from a variety of funding sources - offerings on the designated Sunday, earnings on investments of gifts from wills and annuities, and repayments and interest on student loans. Support for United Methodist Student Day is crucial if we are to honor the church's commitment to educating a new generation of Christian leaders. [Recipients from West Ohio]

segregatedThat declaration, which has been attributed to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., used to startle listeners. Now it's virtually become a cliché. In the latest issue of the academic journal Sociological Inquiry, two professors dug deeper into why Sundays remain so segregated. [more]

Braden UMC sponsors annual "All Saint's Night"

bradenumcBraden UMC sponsored an annual "All Saint's Night' for the children and parents in the church and community, in lieu of the traditional Halloween Night of "Trick & Treat." The children enjoyed games, food, prizes and just having fun. Their happy faces and the appreciation on their parent's faces confirmed that this was a good ministry for the community. Normally about 150 -175 persons are in attendance. Read more stories on the West Ohio Facebook fan page.

"Kindness explosion" in Reynoldsburg
reynoldsburgOn an October Saturday, residents living and working in Reynoldsburg were treated to a "kindness explosion." More than 150 volunteers from the twelve participating churches - including two West Ohio UM churches - gathered at eleven strategic locations within the city to envelope the community of Reynoldsburg in love. This city has seen its fair share of "urban flight" but church leaders saw this event as an opportunity to spread a Christian message in tough times. United in Love

Reynoldsburg UMC, one of the "Love Reynoldsburg" member churches, has started a new community of faith in an area of the Reynoldsburg community hard hit by tough times. Satellite Church.

DENOMINATION NEWS

Bishops support church reforms, accountability

calltoactionThe United Methodist Church needs to institute widespread reforms - from consolidating general church agencies to holding bishops and clergy accountable for church growth. The Call to Action Steering Team's final report, presented to the Council of Bishops, says the status quo of a shrinking and aging church is "toxic" and unsustainable. Approval of the report was heralded as a step forward for a church that has suffered decades of membership decline in the United States.
