CWR Bloggers Haven
Comments From the Blog

The following question was submitted by CWR Roundtable member Rubin Wilkins of Florida A&M University.

What are some important things do you think freshmen college students should know or have when going off to college?

Comment from Subena Perry of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

I think that freshmen should be fully aware of the undergraduate programs and some of their requirements and courses needed (for those who know what they will be majoring in). They also need to be educated on how often those courses are offered so that they do not pass up the opportunity on an atypically offered class for another class that would be offered every semester. Too many students at my school have taken courses during their freshman year that are not needed, and because of time wasted taking those courses, they are stuck during senior year trying to play "catch up." Some may even be required to spend an extra semester.

As for incoming freshmen, I believe that they should be assigned mentors preferably reputable seniors. I think this would be beneficial since freshmen have much to absorb, especially being exposed to a new environment. Some may not have friends and some may be afraid of change. This idea may potentially relieve some of the social road blocks that could affect their performance in class. Coming on campus "knowing" that someone is there waiting to show the ins and outs of a positive college experience is something that freshmen should have when going off to college.

Dr. Alduan Tartt Jerry Thurman

Although our selection of the name TNT for our new relationship column represents the first letters of the last names of the contributors, it is also a reminder that relationships can be explosive.  Our concern in introducing the relationship column, and Dr. Jeanne King's column, "Breaking The Cycle," is the continuing episodes of violence in relationships.  We want our readers to be well informed on how to establish sound foundations for their relationships, and understand how to cope with a broken heart, and also how to get help if they become involved in an abusive relationship.

In coming months, Dr. Tartt and Mr. Thurman will present some very interesting and exciting views on relationships for our readers.

What can you do if you have been hurt in a relationship.  Or as a very popular song once asked, "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?"  Read Jerry Thurman's article this month and find some answers.  GO TO THE ARTICLE NOW.
