Reflection Masthead
Issue #24 - June 2010 - Butterfly Release
Oh, Little Butterfly,
Messenger of God,
When I see you in the sky
I cannot help but nod.
You bring me respite
From grief and despair
Every time I see you
Sail through the air.
You renew my faith
In God's wondrous plan
And I know it's all in faith,
Not in what I understand.

Butterfly at My Feet

by Jan

The butterfly, a symbol of new life and rebirth, brings hope and helps us cope. Those of us who have lost a child through death frequently find consolation in the miracle of new life, as the chrysalis is transformed, emerging from its cocoon to uplift its wings in flight.
The butterfly is the logo of The Compassionate Friends. Early each spring, members of our local chapter gather for our annualButterfly Butterfly Release at the Japanese Tea Gardens. Parents, siblings, grandparents and friends gently unfold the envelopes and watch our monarch butterflies open and fold their wings and then freely lift to light on a flower nearby. Usually the butterflies sip some nurturing nectar. We watch the butterflies at our feet as they bid gratitude to their floral perches, and, after awhile, fly away to join the community of other butterflies, bees, and birds.
The Butterfly Release in mid-May was a simple and beautiful symbol to memorialize our children, each in our own ways. At that moment when my butterfly took flight, I felt the presence of my son, Wade. I felt a release of grief and sadness. I felt a whisper of peace.
Two weeks after our Butterfly Release, I was walking up a path along Saint Charles Bay on the Texas Gulf Coast. As I stopped to look at the tiny wildflowers at my feet, a monarch butterfly approached, rested upon a flower, opened his wings and then folded them again as if in prayer. I felt a gentle release and a peaceful whisper.

Listen Up!  by Bill

"If god is nature

Or encompasses nature

Or created nature

Then one must use nature

To converse with god"

These lines are from Larry Jaffe's poem, "Conversations with God." The butterfly release, described by Jan above, was a moving experience of nature giving wings to God's message of hope and life. Listen up - and you may hear God's word of grace and encouragement in the flap of a butterfly's wings, or in the wind rustling the branches, bearing the scent of pine.

Listen up, and you may hear other voices, too. Sioux Chief Arvol Looking Horse writes that the gulf oil spill "looks like the bleeding of Grandmother Earth." The voices of seabirds choking on oil should also be part of our conversation with God. Listen up, and you may hear the cries and groans of God's creation, longing to be set free from bondage (Romans 8:19-22).

The psalms and the prophets remind us that cries of lament and shouts of protest also have their place in our conversation with God.

If god is nature
Or encompasses nature
Or created nature
Then one must use nature
To converse with god
Dancing with butterflies
And listening to seashells
And burning bushes
