About the Bodhi Tree
What does the name mean?
Bo-Tree. Bodhi-Tree. The 'tree of enlightenment' (Bodhi) under which Gautama sat in meditation until enlightenment came to him and he became a Buddha. This was on the banks of a tributary of the Ganges, near a shrine of Vishnu at Gaya (Q.V.). The site is now called Buddha-Gaya or Budh-Gaya.
The Bo-Tree is a pipal (or pepal, sacred fig tree, Ficus Religiosa), which often occurs as a sacred tree in religious literature and practice. Legend said that all Buddhas were enlightened on the Diamond Seat under this tree. A shoot of the tree from Gaya was taken to Ceylon in the third century BC by the nun Sanghmita, a daughter of the emperor Ashoka, and planted at the famous Buddhist center at Anuradhapura where it is said to be the oldest historical tree in the world. Shoots were planted in many Celonese temples and also returned to India after the destruction o fthe original Bo-Tree there. Bronze pipal leaves hang from the spires of many pagodas in Burma and tinkle in the wind.

The tree has beautiful heart-shaped leaves. A neighbor who lived nearby on West Knoll raised it from a seed and gave it to the store years ago. It was in a large pot for several years - then planted in the back area where it is today. The tree is now about 35 feet high and about 12 inches in diameter. These trees grow slowly and reach a full, mature height of about 125 feet in about 100 years.

The above description came from literature from the Bodhi Tree Bookstore. It has been such a joy to present ongoing seminars - and now my book launch and signing! - there over the years. Since moving to Los Angeles from London in the mid-1980s, I've enjoyed visiting the store with its the large and diverse selection of books. Quite often people tell me they have traveled from other cities to see the books and attend events like mine. Since the future of the store is in question - the property itself having been sold and the name and inventory now up for sale - I recommend taking advantage of what this unique place offers now over the next couple of months. We don't know at this point how long after September the store will be open in its current configuration.
All of us who love the Bodhi Tree, though, are thinking positive thoughts and wishes that it will continue to serve metaphysical book lovers.
