UCLA, UCI and Cedars Sinai are among grant winners
The grants, up to $20 million per applicant, go to teams of researchers in both academia and industry who have been working on projects that represent the best possible chances of producing therapies for deadly and disabling diseases and disorders. The Advisory board -- whose members to be announced soon -- will provide guidance in developing the much-needed strategic plan for growing the County's bioscience industry cluster. Second Sight's Retinal Implant -- Argus II -- Will Be Up for Review by the FDA in September
The device is the first of its kind in enabling partial vision in patients blinded by retinitis pigmentosa
The data presented in the HDE application will be discussed by the advisory panel. If FDA market approval is granted, the Argus II system will become the first ever retinal prosthesis to gain approval in the U.S. The system became the only approved retinal prosthesis anywhere in the world when it received CE Mark approval in Europe last year ..
