Look Good...Feel Better Reflects on a Successful 2011

Although 2012 is well under way, we need to take a look back at 2011, which was a banner year for Look Good...Feel Better. With the support of volunteers, council member companies, and national collaborators, we expanded our presence, welcomed new high-profile supporters, and, most importantly, continued to help women around the world regain their self-esteem and confidence during their cancer experience.

Expanded Presence

  • Look Good...Feel Better was featured on the pages of major national publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Allure, and Women’s Wear Daily; lauded on Fox News and Access Hollywood; and discussed on radio programs in Washington, DC; Philadelphia; Chicago; New York City; and other major cities.
  • Through these efforts, we generated more than 550 million measurable media impressions, with millions more consumers being reached by blog posts, tweets, and Facebook posts.
  • We welcomed more than 200,000 visitors to the Look Good...Feel Better Web site (lookgoodfeelbetter.org) and topped 5,000 Facebook “likes” from friends and fans around the world.

Powerful Partners

  • Look Good...Feel Better had the privilege of working with a number of notable celebrities, including Olympic gold medalist and 2011 DreamGirl Shannon Miller; television hosts Kelly Ripa, Stacy London, and Giada De Laurentis; actresses Mila Kunis, Eva Longoria, Zoe Saldana, and Olivia Wilde; FOX News correspondent Jennifer Griffin; and celebrity makeup artist Carmindy.
  • We celebrated a new partnership with Stacy London’s Style for Hire, and – with their help – developed a new styling component for our workshop curriculum, which is set to roll out early this year.
  • Our online Ask the Expert column featured articles from well-known beauty experts, including Frederic Fekkai, David Babaii, and Carol Cole.
  • The Personal Care Products Council member companies donated more than $7 million worth of product for use in Look Good...Feel Better workshops nationwide.

Program Expansion

From new program components to new ways of sharing Look Good...Feel Better content with new audiences, 2011 saw us expand the work we do around the world.

  • We introduced Look Good...Feel Better for teens into social media through Facebook, providing teen program updates for facilities in Philadelphia and California and expanding the program to a new facility in the St. Luke’s Mountain State Tumor & Children’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho.
  • We launched our first-ever virtual workshop series, which brought the Look Good...Feel Better program experience to more than 3,000 participants through three streaming workshops online.
  • We served 50,000 women with cancer at 3,000 Look Good...Feel Better group workshop locations nationwide.
  • We had a pilot program of a new online “refresher course” for our volunteers, which will roll out later this year.

And the best part of all?

An incredible 94 percent of our Look Good...Feel Better Participant Evaluation Survey respondents indicated that they were either very satisfied or satisfied with the program overall; 95 percent said the program was either very useful or useful in improving self-image; and more than 96 percent would recommend Look Good...Feel Better to other cancer patients.

Thanks to everyone who helped serve more patients, raise awareness, or raise funds for the Look Good...Feel Better program over the past year, and thanks in advance for your continued support in 2012.

Congratulations to the 2011 State Sunrise Award Recipients!

Forty- six Look Good...Feel Better ® volunteers were recently recognized for their outstanding service, contributions, and dedication to the Look Good...Feel Better program by being honored with the 2011 State Sunrise Awards. Thanks to their ongoing efforts, these volunteers have touched the lives of thousands of cancer patients around the country.

To be considered for the State Sunrise Award, a volunteer must participate in at least four Look Good...Feel Better programs or activities during the year. They are nominated by American Cancer Society staff or peers, or they can nominate themselves in one of three categories: Professional Beauty Association | National Cosmetology Association (PBA | NCA) certified cosmetology volunteer, Look Good...Feel Better certified cosmetology volunteer, and Look Good...Feel Better general volunteer. Winners are selected in each category by Society Division staff members who are responsible for the program in their respective regions of the country.

All state winners are then eligible to be considered for the National Sunrise Awards. A panel of six independent judges representing the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and PBA | NCA select the three national recipients of the honor. The 2011 national award recipients will be presented with their awards this summer.

Following is a listing of the 2011 State Sunrise Award winners. Thanks to each of you, as well as to all the volunteers, whose dedication and selflessness make the Look Good...Feel Better possible!
