Bednarsh Highlighted In Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's Blog
xx
For the past five and a half years, Helene Bednarsh RDH MPH, Director of the Boston Public Health Commission's HIV Dental Program, has worked with a special federal grant to evaluate how well dental programs for persons living with HIV are working. She has been part of a team at the Boston University School of Public Health and some of their findings have just been published in the journal Public Health Reports.
xx The article, Innovations in Oral Health Care for People Living with HIV/AIDS, shows that innovative program models - like the program run at BPHC - can really help people who are living with HIV/AIDS find oral health-care services. The articles in this special issue present valuable and cutting-edge information that can help improve public health services across the country, including advocating for the continuation of Ryan White Program funding.
xx
OSAP members should note that Helene, along with David Reznik DDS, will be presenting important resources from HIVdent at the upcoming OSAP Symposium. Helene and David's lecture is scheduled for Saturday, June 23 at the Atlanta meeting.

Auction Action At The Preakness
xx
xxx
Jean Wolff RDH MSEd enjoyed her 2011 OSAP Auction win - a trip to the Preakness May 18-19. The Preakness Package was one of the auction items from last year's Symposium and featured full participation in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown of Horse Racing. Pictured above Jean (far left) is joined by (left to right) Maureen Callahan, Therese Long, Norma Rychwalski, Andrea Rychwalski and Larry Fish in front of the Winner's Circle at the Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, MD. The weather could not have been more perfect for Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another to pull off a second win in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. The three-year-old colt overtook Bodemeister in the final inches of the Preakness and is now in strong contention to win the Triple Crown, a feat that has not been experienced in 34 years.
xx
OSAP members are encouraged to participate in the 2012 OSAP Auction by donating an item, bidding or both. All proceeds from OSAP's Charity Auction support the work of its educational foundation which has developed the Infection Control Checklist for Portable and Mobile Dental Programs, among other important resources and tools.

OSAP Book Club
Eve Cuny MS (Arthur A. Dugoni Pacific School of Dentistry) just finished A Train in Winter by Caroline Moorehead. Description: They were teachers, students, chemists, writers, and housewives; a singer at the Paris Opera, a midwife, a dental surgeon. They distributed anti-Nazi leaflets, printed subversive newspapers, hid resisters, secreted Jews to safety, transported weapons, and conveyed clandestine messages. Eventually, the Gestapo hunted down 230 of these women and imprisoned them in a fort outside Paris. Separated from home and loved ones, these disparate individuals turned to one another, their common experience conquering divisions of age, education, profession, and class, as they found solace and strength in their deep affection and camaraderie. In January 1943, they were sent to their final destination: Auschwitz. Only forty-nine would return to France.
xxxx Anne Mills RN MSn COHN-S (Concord Hospital) is reading Flu: The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It by Gina Kolata. Description: When we think of plagues, we think of AIDS, Ebola, anthrax spores, and, of course, the Black Death. But in 1918 the Great Flu Epidemic killed an estimated 40 million people virtually overnight. If such a plague returned today, taking a comparable percentage of the US population with it, 1.5 million Americans would die. In Flu, Gina Kolata, an acclaimed reporter for The New York Times, unravels the mystery of this lethal virus with the high drama of a great adventure story. From Alaska to Norway, from the streets of Hong Kong to the corridors of the White House, Kolata tracks the race to recover the live pathogen and probes the fear that has impelled government policy.
xxxShannon Mills DDS (Northeast Delta Dental) is enjoying Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway. Description: The people the authors accuse in this carefully documented book are themselves scientists-mostly physicists, former cold warriors who now serve a conservative agenda, and vested interests like the tobacco industry. Seven compelling chapters detail seven issues (acid rain, the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke, the ozone hole, global warming, the Strategic Defense Initiative, and the banning of DDT) in which this group aimed to sow seeds of public doubt on matters of settled science. They did so by casting aspersions on the science and the scientists who produce it.

Job Opportunities
Research Manager, Pew Children's Dental Campaign
In 2008, the Pew Center on the States (PCS) launched the Pew Children's Dental Campaign to improve access to dental health care for disadvantaged children. Dental care is the biggest unmet health need among children. The campaign advances state policy reforms in three principal areas:
x
(1) access to dental care, including coverage under Medicaid, health care reform and reimbursement rates;
(2) prevention, particularly community water fluoridation; and (3) expanding the workforce, including developing new types of dental professionals, and using existing providers more efficiently.
x
PCS is mounting intensive advocacy efforts for state and federal policy reforms where these changes can dramatically improve children's lives. National and state level efforts involve research to build the evidence base for reform; coalition-building; lobbying; communications and media outreach strategies; polling; technical assistance; convening partners; and educating policy makers and the public. This position will report to the project director of the Children's Dental Campaign and is based in Washington, DC.
x
The manager will work with the director and the team to craft the overall research plan to support both federal and state campaigns and will be responsible for two key roles within the Children's Dental Campaign. This person will manage the initiative's research portfolio, supervise staff and contractors, and collaborate closely with other PCS colleagues, including the Research and Development unit and staff within other campaigns and initiatives. This person will also function as a senior administrative manager, assisting with budgets, planning, and shaping funding agreements with partners. Click here for further information.

If Saliva Were Red Training Video (DVD)
Named for Dr. James Crawford's landmark 1970s study that confirmed the presence of contamination in the dental operatory, the OSAP-produced video training system "If Saliva Were Red" features an 8-minute video (on DVD) that uses real dental professionals to highlight:
- common infection control and safety flaws,
- the cross-contamination dental workers would see if saliva were red, and
- how controlling contamination by using personal barrier protection, safe work practices, and effective infection control products, reduces the risk of exposure.
