Global Healthcare Leader Bergman Named OSAP Symposium Keynote Speaker

x

Marion BergmanOSAP welcomes Dr. Marion Bergman as its speaker for the 2012 Dr. John S. Zapp Memorial Lecture, the keynote presentation during the OSAP Annual Symposium June 21-23 in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme of this year's conference is Connecting to Drive Compliance.

x

Established in 2006, the Dr. John Zapp Memorial Lecture's purpose is to build bridges for global leaders to promote the exchange of knowledge regarding infection prevention and safety for dental patients and providers. Dr. Bergman is scheduled to address the Symposium on Friday, June 22. The lecture is supported by a generous educational grant from the Midmark Corporation.

x

Dr. Marion Bergman's credentials and extensive expertise are second to none, and we are delighted to welcome her as our speaker for the Dr. Zapp Memorial Lecture, said OSAP Executive Director, Therese Long. The Dr. Zapp Memorial Lecture is one of the many highlights of our Symposium, and the addition of Dr. Bergman will make this a 'must-attend' conference for all of those responsible for ensuring infection prevention in an oral healthcare setting. This year's theme is about building those connections with global leaders to drive compliance in infection prevention throughout the world. Dr. Bergman's work to provide quality, safe healthcare in the developing world is the epitome of this theme, and we are thrilled that she will be sharing her knowledge and experience with our attendees.

x

Dr. Bergman is the Director of Healthcare Projects for Miracle Corners of the World, Inc. In addition, she serves as a trustee for the Global Child Dental Fund, the American Jewish World Service and Physicians for Human Rights. While continuing to practice medicine part time, she devotes the majority of her time and energy to rural health and improvement projects in the developing world. She also serves as a Governor of the American Jewish Committee, a co-founder of its Africa Institute, and a member of its Jacob Blaustein Institute for Human Rights Administrative Council. She is an Advisory Board Member of Tel Aviv University's Harold Hartog School of Government and Public Policy, and a Member of the Board of Visitors for Temple University's Komberg School of Dentistry.

Symposium Updates

x

In addition to our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Marion Bergman, the Symposium Program Committee just added the following new speakers to the already robust program:

x

Raymond Roberge MD MPH is a Research Medical Officer with CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Cincinnati, Ohio. In his presentation, Dr. Roberge will share research regarding respirator handling (i.e., antimicrobial respirator work and reaerosolization issues), as well as related work assessing surgical masks and filtering facepiece respirators. He is joining fellow NIOSH scientist Casey Chosewood MD.  Dr. Chosewood will introduce Symposium attendees to the NIOSH Total Worker Health Initiative, a research-to-practice effort that integrates the principles of traditional occupational health and worker protection programs with proven, innovative health promotion and well-being interventions.  Together, this dynamic duo will deliver a relevant research update to help every Symposium attendee Connect With Compliance.

xxx
Witty and erudite Dr. Gordon Watkins, former President of the British Dental Association, will be joining Dr. John O'Keefe to discuss the legal and regulatory framework surrounding infection prevention in dental offices in the UK and Canada.  Through their insightful lessons learned, Symposium attendees will understand possible ways going forward to enhance compliance in the US and elsewhere as a way of improving the safety of patients and dental personnel.

x

Hobdell Receives Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) Award - Recognized For Commitment To Global Health

x

Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) has announced the recipients of the seventh annual HVO Golden Apple Award. As part of its World Health Day observances, HVO created this award to recognize the extraordinary educational contributions of volunteers to international program sites. Each HVO volunteer honored with this award has demonstrated a strong commitment to HVO's educational mission by working on curriculum development, teacher training, didactic or clinical training, or the enhancement of educational resources.

Included among this year's recipients is OSAP Board Member Martin Hobdell BDS PhD MA.

The efforts of HVO's Golden Apple Award recipients are an integral part of HVO's response to the global health workforce shortage. By highlighting the achievements and contributions of the Golden Apple Award recipients, HVO fosters an awareness of global health issues, especially the human resource shortage, which serves as a serious constraint to the delivery of health care around the world.

Congratulations Martin!

OSAP Book Club

The April 17 issue of The Washington Post features a fascinating article called Unburied treasure - Tissue from long-dead bodies reveals secrets of AIDS, influenza and more.  This article is compelling and also mentions two related books that sound like excellent reads for OSAP-ians:

xx

Tinderbox: How the West Sparked the AIDS Epidemic and How the World Can Finally Overcome It. Authors Craig Timberg and Daniel Halperin argue that newly developed trade routes carried HIV out of a jungle in southeastern Cameroon and that prostitution then helped it take hold in Congo's colonial cities.

x

In The Origin of AIDS, French Canadian physician Jacques Pepin cites those facts, but also argues that unsterilized needles used in mass treatment campaigns against sleeping sickness, leprosy, syphilis and malaria helped spread the virus widely in the decade or two after simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) entered people.

OSAP member Phil Westover just finished In The Garden Of Beasts by Erik Larson, and Phil says:

I think this book is a must-read for amateur historians and people interested in society and politics.  It provides a glimpse into pre-WW II Germany, as Hitler and the Nazis developed their power.  The author illustrates how such a dark and terrible result can build within a society in such a way to be subtle and not-so-alarming, until it becomes too late to do anything about it.  Anyone who is interested in how this could happen should read this book.

Phil also says:

The other book I've recently finished is "Ghosts of Empire: Britain's Legacies in the Modern World" by Kwasi Kwarteng.  I bought this book while staying at Dr. John Hunt's home in the U.K. (an OSAP auction purchase), and it brought to light so much about not only the height of the British Empire, but also many aspects of how certain former colonies are functioning today.  It is amazing that a developed country such as Great Britain can affect change (or not) in certain societies around the world.  A fascinating study.

OSAP Member Leann Keefer RDH MSM recommends The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People by Gary Chapman. Amazon.com describes this book as follows:

Is appreciation communicated regularly at your workplace? Do you truly feel valued by those with whom you work? If you express appreciation in ways that aren't meaningful to your coworkers, they may not feel valued at all. The problem is you're speaking different languages. In The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, Dr. Gary Chapman and Dr. Paul White will help you: * Express genuine appreciation to coworkers and staff - even on a tight budget. * Increase loyalty with the employees and volunteers in your organization. * Reduce cynicism and create a more positive work environment. * Individualize your expressions of appreciation by speaking the right language. Based on the #1 New York Times best seller The 5 Love Languages, Dr. Chapman and Dr. White give you practical steps to make any workplace environment more encouraging and productive. You will learn to speak and understand the unique languages of appreciation and feel truly valued in return.

What are YOU reading? We would like to hear more from you. Let us know at webmaster@osap.org what books you recommend for OSAP readers.
