2010 OSAP Awards

OSAP presented its prestigious annual awards at the recent Symposium. The Dr. James J. Crawford Award was conferred to Enrique Acosta-Gio DDS PhD; the Dr. Milton Schaefer Award to Lois Cohen PhD and Nancy Tomich Zapp; and the Bette & Paul Schwarz Award to Matt Deck.

The Dr. James J. Crawford Award, named in honor of one of the founding fathers of dental infection control, recognizes lifetime achievement in the field. Dr. Acosta received this important award for initiating several major OSAP programs in Latin America and for his global efforts on OSAP's behalf. A tenured Professor at the National University of Mexico (UNAM), Dr. Acosta has been a tireless advocate for dental infection prevention, patient safety, and OSAP around the world.

The Dr. Milton Schaefer Award, also named after a founding member, recognizes superior service to the organization. The Award was presented to Lois Cohen PhD and Nancy Tomich Zapp, who have co-chaired the Friends of OSAP since its inception. Dr. Cohen and Ms. Tomich Zapp have drawn together a global network of dental and medical leaders who are helping OSAP build bridges and increase its visibility, credibility, and relevance. They have attracted top executives in dentistry's most influential organizations to deliver the annual Dr. John Zapp lecture.

Dr. Cohen is a Consultant with the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health. A sociologist who pioneered the integration of the social and behavioral sciences and dental research, she has published over 120 research papers and edited four books. She serves as one of the Paul G. Rogers Ambassadors for Global Health Research under the auspices of Research!America and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Ms. Tomich is Managing Director of the Institute of Federal Health Care. She has organized numerous conferences on public health and federal health care issues. A freelance writer and consultant in healthcare, she is a co-founder of the consulting firm ZTZ & Associates.

The Bette & Paul Schwarz Award, named after a couple who epitomize the volunteer spirit of the organization, recognizes volunteerism at OSAP's annual Symposium. The Schwarz Award was presented to Matt Deck for his exceptional willingness to serve in any capacity needed to ensure the success of the Symposium.

Mr. Deck is Assistant to the Director of Clinical Affairs at the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He has an extraordinary "can do" spirit, is well organized, enthusiastic and is highly valued at the Dental School and at OSAP.

Congratulations to all of this year's OSAP award recipients! These important recognition awards are sponsored into perpetuity by a generous grant from SPSmedical Supply Company, a corporate member of OSAP.

If Saliva Were Red Training Video (DVD)

Named for Dr. James Crawford's landmark 1970s study that confirmed the presence of contamination in the dental operatory, the OSAP-produced video training system "If Saliva Were Red" features an 8-minute video (on DVD) that uses real dental professionals to highlight:
  • common infection control and safety flaws,
  • the cross-contamination dental workers would see if saliva were red, and
  • how controlling contamination by using  personal barrier protection, safe work practices, and effective infection control products, reduces the risk of exposure.
