REFLECTIONS FROM THE DMV SEASON 3 OF PEP TALK TAPINGS

I do have a blog where I put down some things which were on my mind about the shoot on Sunday, May 6, but I feel very excited that I was able to bring so many people in the DMV area together to meet, greet and share their story with a larger audience. READ THE BLOG HERE.
Almost everyone who was a part of the set on Sunday had something delightful to say. "Hi Rosie, It was indeed a pleasure working with you on Sunday. I admired how you took control of the production delay and glued things together. I also was reminded of how talented you are on and off camera. Keep up the good work, and thank you for choosing me with your trusted project. I foresee many great things ahead." Alex Flemmings, Jr.
"You are 'peppy' awesome! Love you and the great work you continue to do!" Moreen Wallace
"Yaa Gyasi, it was my pleasure being around so many positive cultural artists, who I had not seen in a while, as well as being in your wonderful home/studio environment. You are truly a positive, progressive, loved and valuable resource within our community circle." Senghor Jawara Baye
"Greetings and nuff respect. The other day you brought us all together and it was more enlightening than was anticipated. We as Washington entertainers, for the first time, had a chance to bond and talked about situations on the local music circuits. What you did deserves a lot of credits ,and we are all very thankful for the exposure we'll get from your endeavor." Carl Malcolm "Peppy, I was just thinking about how amazing and how thoughtful a person you are to want to feature all the local/national artists/musicians in the DMV area. Trust me, no one has ever done that in my 34+ years around here. This was so over the top and greatly appreciloved. What you did is above and beyond and priceless. I also want to thank you personally for doing such a wonderful thing for Strykers Posse and I am sure I echo the sentiments of all." Ichelle Cole Very special thanks to the following people: Alex Flemmings (videography) Demesha Dyer (my hair) Nicole Wright (my makeup) Lewis & Trevor (set assistants) GUESTS: Jalani Horton Dutty Bookman Richard Willis Loughton Sargeant Senghor Jawara Baye Kathy English-Holt Carl & Aneeta Malcolm Lenny Kurlou Tony Roy Ichelle Cole Yvonne Deane-Hibbert Michael Campbell Moreen Wallace Fiona & Nicole Wright Rosemary Banks Stephen King

Celebrating Teachers, Mothers & The Women in YOUR Life
|
 |
Mothers Unite: Moreen Wallace and me on the set of Season 3 of PEP Talk, May 6, 2012
|
Greetings,
The week started off beautifully for me because Sunday was all about Part 1 of the DMV Season 3 PEP Talk Shoots. It was a very long but amazing day and while I do not remember much regarding the actual interviews (because I was in full PEP mode and doing instead of observing), I do remember thinking that it was sooooo good to have so many movers and shakers in the DC, MD, VA area all under one roof networking and learning even more about each other. I have much more to say about that, but if you want to read it, click on my blog HERE and check out some of the comments on the left side bar. This week I am very excited to be celebrating teachers and mothers. My favorite teacher was Ms. Inez Clarke when I was in Grade 5 at New Providence Primary School back in the day, and it was Ms. Clarke who told me at the age of 9 "Rosie, you are so very special and if you continue to do your best, you will one day be a very powerful woman." She was the one who inspired me and convinced my parents to let me sit the Common Entrance Examination (now called GSAT) when I was younger than my peers and in Grade 5. She was the one who gave me extra lessons and encouraged me to choose the school I always wanted to attend as my first choice. Her report card was the last one I got at New Providence Primary and I got all As and A+s -- my father was so proud that he carried it around in his wallet with him for years. As we celebrate National Teachers Appreciation this week (today is the last day), all my graduation hats from all the places I have been to school go off to Ms. Inez Clarke for the early groundation (new word).
On to Mother's Day: As a mother myself, I know how special this Sunday is for other mothers and children who love their mothers. There is no mother I know who is not a teacher, so there are even more reasons to celebrate mothers this Sunday as we get off the celebration of teachers. Last year I wrote a very emotional piece honoring my mother. Click HERE to read it. This year, I am wishing she were physically with me now but I know that she has me in her heart. I am sending kisses, hugs, encouragement, love, peace and light to my mother, Cecilyn Parke and I am wishing her a day of reflection on all the proud moments that her 5 children have given her over the years. After a while and especially when your children are grown, THOSE are the memories that keep us smiling especially when they are no longer living with us. I can certainly relate to that.
To all the women who have throughout the years been a mother(like)-figure in my life, and all the mothers and mothers-to-be out there, I send you love and continued blessings.
To everyone else, please remember to give major acknowledgement to the mother figures in YOUR life on Sunday and remember that "Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever." Happy Mother's Day,
Yaa Gyasi Peppy Parke

WOMEN OF POWER INDUCTION
 |
Akilah Karima, me and Stacey Karima at WOP Induction on May 3 |
Last Thursday I was privileged to be inducted into the Women of Power Sisterhood along with two other sisters. It was a beautiful evening at the Eden Lounge in Baltimore and I felt very special to have my #1 PEP Talk supporter, friend and sponsor, Leon Staton in the audience. My friends Akilah Karima and Lewis Buchanan were also there to support and so many others called, texted, emailed and sent congratulations and well wishes my way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank another woman of power and a woman I have admired for many years now, RESHADA PULLEN for nominating me -- I had no idea she was the person behind the nomination until this week. It really does my heart proud that there are other women around who are looking out for and supporting each other, and I am therefore encouraging all the women out there to be a part of something that is bigger than YOU. Do connect with other powerful sisters out there.
Women of Power was established in August 2010, by visionary and founder Eric Stewart, to connect diverse women of influence throughout the region that help impact our communities in a positive way. Women of Power recognizes women of diverse backgrounds who are doing great things in business, community and charity. The Women of Power Organization serves as a working resource directory for its members to utilize for support, collaboration, and assistance in growing their individual brands and businesses. Ultimately, service to the organization should be measured by its members' efforts to improve our communities and society, individually and collectively. LIKE them on Facebook. Email: sthomas@emedia.com for more information and to nominate a woman of power.

ROMAIN VIRGO'S 'THE SYSTEM' DROPPED ON MAY 8
Reggae singer Romain Virgo released a new album on May 8. The System (VP Records) is his second full length release since his musical debut in 2010. Already having attained the title of Reggae Artist of the Year for 2012 by JaRIA, this new project will be sure to solidify his position in the reggae arena. As the title suggests, The System is full of songs about the struggle of survival in Jamaica. Even though the songs are a window into parts of Romain's life growing up, the songs are relevant to anyone facing the same disadvantages in
having no job or even a minimum wage occupation. The songs are a vivid depiction of what those less fortunate have to deal with while trying to preserve self or care for a whole family.
