Welcome to May,
This month is special to me because it is all about seniors as we celebrate Older Americans Month and pay attention to the theme "Never Too Old to Play." Oftentimes, my friends and I see folks who we feel are too old to be in the club acting a fool, or too old to be dressing a certain way, or too old to be courting such a younger person, or too old for this or too old for that, and when we witness these things, I am usually the one who smiles and says "Leave them alone, you are old as you feel." I honestly believe that people should be free to express themselves however they feel like (as long as THEY are fine with it). I also understand what society deems as age-appropriate behavior and I do have certain things that are on my "Oh NO, he/she didn't" list, but I love when people who are older engage in activities which keep them youthful. I am also fortunate to work among a group of seniors who keep showing me that "there is nothing senior about these seniors" and I find myself missing my paternal grandmother who was extremely agile up to her last days (she passed at 87). My father who has been a senior for 10 years now has more pep on the dance floor than many who are decades younger than him, and I love to dance with him because he dances until the party shuts down and I like to think that I have inherited that too from him. My mother is not too bad on the dance floor either, so look out for ME dancing up a storm as I continue to age gracefully.
On the real though, I was taking a bath the other day and as I was laying there reflecting on some of the things I will be doing in the month of May, my thoughts drifted to my parents who I had seen very recently. Tears of joy came to my eyes when I thought about how fortunate my family is that our parents are able-bodied and can take care of themselves. I know many friends who are taking care of parents and grandparents who are old and sick and sometimes bedridden and just hearing them talk about how emotionally and physically stressful and challenging it is for them makes me keep giving thanks that my parents are not in that position (right now). We all will get older or die young and I intend to live for a very long time. It is therefore very important that if YOU want to live a long and healthy life, you take care of yourself to give yourself a better chance of aging better. Also, if you are dealing with an older person who has severe health and physical challenges, please try to exercise a little more patience with them as you aid in their care. As a good deed this month, consider visiting with an older person this month...just think about it, and then do it. With age comes wisdom and you never know what you will learn from that older person and more importantly, I can guarantee that you will brighten up that person's day. In closing, remember that "Aging seems to be the only available way to live a long life."
