Family,

This week, we are keeping it very short and sweet (as far as MY editorial).  The only things which invade my mind are thoughts of my dear friend, Faruq Muhammad who would have been celebrating his 62nd birthday this Sunday had he not died from chordoma (a rare form of cancer) last year, and the fact that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
It seems like every time I turn around, someone I know has cancer, and/or someone who is a friend or relative of a friend of mine has died from cancer.  In fact, that word, "the Big C" has become such a conversation piece that these days I do not know how to react when I hear that someone has it.  All I can do is shake my head and pray for their recovery and hope that no one very close to me (or I) will not have to go through that.
Below you will find a beautiful flier for a friend of mine, Shauna Chin who is doing her own campaign for breast cancer because she lost her childhood friend to the disease.  Pay closer attention to the message Shauna is trying to send and less to her beautiful face and body :-)
The importance of checking your breasts, ti-tis, tits, ta-tas, boobs, or whatever you call them cannot be over-emphasized.  Matter of fact, while you are checking for lumps in your breasts, also pay close attention to changes on your overall body.  Cancer seems to be everywhere so early detection is our best hope.

Stay healthy and happy.  Happy Columbus Day weekend to the USA massive, and Happy Thanksgiving to the Canada crew.  Florida massive, tek time pan de road wid de heap of carnival revelry this weekend.

This week we pay special recognition in honor of the late and great, Brother Faruq Muhammad who passed on December, 24, 2010 and who would have celebrated his 62nd birthday on this Sunday, October 9.

Like many who have been dubbed heroes, the anniversary of their births continue to be celebrated after they have transitioned.

Because Faruq is one of my heroes (I am sure the folks over at the UNIA-ACL feel the same way), I intend to honor his memory every October.
May his legacy live on and on and may those of us who knew him remember him for the strong Black man he was.

Please sit back and watch the very first pepisode of PEP Talk! which premiered on January 1, 2011 and featured Brother Faruq Muhammad.

at a press conference at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica yesterday.
Holness' rise to the top

of the ruling party comes after Prime Minister Bruce Golding's recent announcement of his plan to resign as party leader and Prime Minister.

The party also announced that the support for Holness was at the Parliamentary level and that nominations were not closed.

Party Chairman Mike Henry, who signalled his intent to run for the post of party leader, was not present at the press conference.

HAITI HAS NEW PRIME MINISTER
(Source:  Carib Life Central)
Haiti's Senate approved  Garry Conille as prime minister yesterday, endorsing President  Michel Martelly's third nominee for the post in a move many  hope will boost reconstruction efforts in the  earthquake-ravaged nation.

The Senate's confirmation of Conille, 45, a medical doctor  and U.N. development expert, followed approval from the lower  house of parliament last month.
It was Martelly's third attempt to install a new head of  government. His first two nominees were rejected by lawmakers  in June and August. This had raised concerns among diplomats  and donors who said the poor Caribbean state desperately needed  a working government to rebuild from a devastating 2010  earthquake.

A NOTE FROM ACTRESS SHAUNA CHIN:

"As another October starts, the pink ribbons are out in full bloom.   The race to find a cure for breast cancer is in higher gear and we all do our due diligence to support the cause.  It's so hard not to shake  the feeling though, that unless you have been personally affected by this deadly disease through yourself or someone close to you, that it's easy to be immune to the pink ribbon.  How many ladies actually check their own breasts every month to make sure they are lump free?  Truthfully, how many ladies remember how to actually check their  breasts?  Here's another interesting question ... How many males know  that they can get breast cancer too? As long as you have a breast, you  are at risk.
