Welcome to Summer!

3gals

Dianne Eubanks, Rosie and Loide hanging at Reggae Tuesdays on 06/21/11

Dear Friends,

Tuesday marked the official beginning of Summer, but many of us have been feeling "hot, hot, hot" long before and have been taking the Summer necessities with us wherever we go:  sunscreen, sunshade, water, hats, shorts, sandals, etc.  It has been great to see so many folks who were spending the bulk of their time indoors in recent months, and it is always wonderful to see folks riding, running, walking, and just hanging out.

To date, Caribbean American Heritage Month has been a great opportunity for people to reconnect, learn about other cultures, and celebrate the contributions that Caribbean-Americans have made to the USA.  We cannot stop doing these things after June has ended.

Dr. Claire Nelson, Oji Jaja, me, and Lydia McDaniel at the White House Briefing on 06/22/11

At the CAHM White House Briefing on Wednesday June 22, apart from being briefed on policies and pertinent information we should be aware of; we were also encouraged to go for it and not wait on others to give us permission.  The theme of the evening was "Winning the Future" and Michael Blake (Associate Director, White House Office of Public Engagement) did his best to engage us and let us know that our views matter to the Obama Administration.  As I sat there listening to all the speakers most of us would typically see on TV, I could not help but feel very privileged to be among the few who have gotten the opportunity to even step foot on the grounds of the White House (my fourth visit).  On two of my visits, Dr. Claire Nelson of the Institute of Caribbean Studies was the "instigator," and on those two visits, I actually felt like more connected to the USA than I ever had before.  Kudos to Dr. Nelson for opening the doors to so many opportunities for so many of us.  Please take the time to link her and commend her for all the work she continues to do to ensure that the powers that be SEE us, HEAR us, and are FEEL our presence when they go about their business.

June is also being celebrated as National Black Music Month so apart from learning about various Caribbean music, we should also take time to learn about some of the great BLACK contributors of music.  Even though we are in the age where we can get music for free by downloading, taking youtube videos and converting them to audio, etc., we really should think about supporting our struggling BLACK artists as they tap into

their passion and give us sweet music to enjoy.

Thanks to all of you who emailed us regarding last week's editorial which was a tribute to my father; I appreciate you taking time to respond to me.  I hope those of you who qualify had a wonderful Father's day weekend with your child(ren) and I encourage all the children out there to also do their part to reconnect with their father, despite what caused that estrangement.   Happy belated birthday to my girl for life, Suzette Salmon, and prayers go out to Buju Banton and his family as they deal with the 10 year sentence Buju was handed.

THE VIRGIN ISLANDS ASSOCIATION (VIA) OF DC

The Virgin Islands Association (VIA) was initially created with the goal of being the "village" for V.I. students in the DC/MD/VA area -- from mentoring to sharing a good VI-style home-cooked meal, to promoting fellowship and fostering a sense of belonging and loyalty to our homeland.  The VIA membership is comprised of individuals from the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, other Caribbean islands and also from various states on the U.S. mainland.

The Virgin Islands Association (VIA) of the DC Metropolitan area was founded in 1980 as a non profit association committed to community, academic excellence and cultural traditions.  VIA is an active community network, supporting the enhancement of cultural diversity and providing professional development and mentoring to our college-bound students.  To fulfill the mission of academic excellence and extend support of Virgin Islands students, VIA launched the Robert Finch Scholarship Program.

Robert Finch, son of Earle and Olyve Finch, served as the first President of the Washington, DC based Virgin Islands Association. Under his leadership, he guided the fledgling organization to develop a robust membership with a mission of supporting the people of the Virgin Islands. Robert Finch believed in the power of education and held a Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan State University and a Master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, both in Social Work. Robert served his military tour of duty in Frankfurt, Germany and worked first in the Virgin Islands for the Department of Health, Division of Mental Health and then as Director of the Drug and Alcohol Division for the Veteran's Administration, in Washington, DC.
