Me and Daddy in London on 05/21/11
Dear Friends, Many of you will remember how emotional and open I got when it was Mother's day in May. I am one of the lucky ones who grew up with both parents in my household and that may be the reason why family is so important to me. I have always had a very special place in my heart for my Daddy; from as long as I can remember. He protected me, provided for me, was always present, praised me, was proud of me, and he spoiled me (not rotten) enough for me to know from very early that I was a Daddy's girl. My father understood BALANCE and knew how to do what he had to do as man while at the same time doing what he needed to do as my mother's husband and our father. He believed in family and instilled confidence, kindness, honor, pride, reliability, commitment and so much more in all his children. From as long as I could remember, I told myself that if the man I am to spend the rest of my life with is not like my father in many ways, then he will never be good enough for me. My father made sure I understood that a man's duty is all about presence, provision and protection for family and his woman. I remember him telling me from when I was about 14 that I should never accept a man who does not live by those three P's. I have never forgotten my father's words. I have carried them with me all these years and the older I get, I realize how wise my father has always been. His love and the way he raised me are among the things which make me value my self worth and exude self confidence. I know many have a tendency to go on and on about mothers, and being a mother myself and having a mother who totally rocks, I get that; BUT there is nothing more precious than a good father who is always there for his child(ren), no matter what...my Daddy is one of those. Happy Father's day to my Daddy (yes, I still call him Daddy), my son's father, all my friends who are fathers, and all the wonderful fathers I have had the opportunity to meet. For those who have lost their father, my heart goes out to you. For those who have never known the love, care, protection, provision and presence of a father; I pray that you have had very good father-figures in your life. Daddy's girl, Rosie Peppy Parke Creative Director Peppy Entertainment & Promotions

Dr. Claire Nelson performing a cultural piece at Food & Folklore on 06/14/11
The Caribbean American Heritage Month (CAHM) celebrations are happening all over the USA, all of June. Since I cannot be in more than one place at a time, I am relying on YOU to share your stories, so we can share with our readers. This past weekend, I attended JNA's Fish Fry Fundraiser and had a nice time eating like I used to when I lived in Jamaica. Jamaican food cooked outside on coal stoves; fish being fried in deep fryers, hard dough bread, festival, plantains, sweet reggae music in the background, and so much more really made me nostalgic. Big up to the JNA crew for all they continue to do. If you want to eat some Jamaican food and mingle with Jamaicans and friends of Jamaicans, link with JNA and attend their Annual Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 17. For more information, email jamaicanationals@yahoo.com or visit them in FACEBOOK.

Reaching to the top of Oji's hat to find his hidden recipes at Food & Folklore 06/14/11.
Last night, I had the opportunity to check out FOOD & FOLKLORE at the amazing Eatonville Restaurant in Washington DC. The event featured Jamaica's culinary artist, OJI ASHEBRE JAJA who is cooking up a storm all of this week in celebration of CAHM. The event was wonderful with folklore by the one and only, Dr. Claire Nelson who sang and did poetry/story-telling that made everyone want to be right back in Jamaica! Doreen Thompson took us on a journey to discover why Caribbean food continues to be the most flavorful on the planet. Dorel Callender introduced us to her new cook book "A Caribbean Mom's Table" which is a MUST have for those of you who love to cook, miss cooking Caribbean food, or need to start cooking. Hosted by Andy Shallal, the owner of Eatonville, the food was amazing; the entertainment was stellar; the company was wonderful; and the vibes was sooooo Caribbean. I actually learned a lot about Zola Neale Hurston who is the inspiration behind Eatonville, and I also met Mr. Shallal and Eatonville's master chef, Garret who was very happy to have Oji share his kitchen for a week. As Garret said, he was at the point when he became cynical about learning about new ways to cook food, and then came Oji who "is introducing me to so many wonderful new flavors and recipes." We love those collaborations, don't you?
Click HERE to see a few photos of the event and click on the video link below to find out why YOU have to try and taste Oji's cooking.
