WOMEN WALKING TALL:
A Women's History Month Celebration |
As you know, March is Women's History Month! Apart from sending you information on amazing women for the past few weeks, each year it is my pleasure to produce an event highlighting the talents, intelligence, wisdom, beauty, determination, and spirit of women.

This year's event will be held on Saturday, March 26 at RAS Lounge in Washington DC. The theme "Women Walking Tall" speaks specifically to those women among us who are walking tall with their heads held high and doing our community proud. These women are fearless, daring, determined, strong, resilient, and are all to be applauded for their unique skills, talents and accomplishments.
Each of the women featured on this Saturday's program is (individually) doing her part in ensuring that women are represented favorably in our community. Collectively, they are a part of the Sisterhood who truly lead by example. As a woman who is also walking tall, it really does my heart proud to celebrate other strong, positive, and phenomenal women...I am humbled to be the little workhorse who is making this fabulous production all come together.
The evening promises to be beautiful, upful, insightful, powerful and wonderful. The women who will bless the stage are all excited and looking forward to sharing with us. I hope you will make the time to join us on Saturday, and I have every confidence that you will have a great time, learn a lot in the process, and leave feeling remarkably blessed.
Happy Women's History month and I hope that you too, are a woman who is walking tall.
Please scroll down to read the condensed bios of the powerful women who will be on stage. See you this Saturday, March 26 if you are in the DMV area.
Welcome to Spring and Happy birthday to a wonderful woman, mother, and friend, Lora Teague!

MEET THE ARTIST

Reshada Pullen, a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, has painted for over eleven years. Her first solo exhibition, Three Fifths Remained Silent (2004) was a body of work that explored issues of the woman's body, love, commerce, and slavery. Among her varied pieces of work are three distinct series: Three Fifths Remained Silent (2004); La Paix de Haiti (2010 - in progress) - This series is a response to the negative images repeatedly shown of Haiti after the devastating earthquake that occurred January 12, 2010. One hundred percent of all sales from this series benefit Haitian Relief organizations such as FaiBien, Beyond Borders, Brothers and Sisters International, and Yele Haiti; and Kiss (2010 - in progress) - This series explores the energy and intimacy of kissing.
Reshada Pullen is both a teacher and a student of art. "I teach children how to think and express their ideas creatively. The Most High teaches me about life through the art-making process."
Reshada will be our featured painter this Saturday, March 26 at Women Walking Tall.
Come and catch her doing a LIVE painting, showing her representation of "Women Walking Tall." Please do not miss this unique opportunity to see art coming to life, right in front of your eyes. The piece created will be auctioned and 50% of funds raised will be donated to a worthy cause.

MEET THE SPOKEN WORD ARTIST

Purposed as an artistic educator, Naima Jahmaal is inspired by the aesthetic of struggle, and the clarity found while wandering through the wilderness of self discovery. Blurring the lines between spoken word, hip hop and narrative prose; Naima's creative momentum is spawned by her fascination with the aggressive literary convictions set forth by the cultural activists of the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts movement. She believes her purpose is an extension of the ongoing fight to create mechanisms for universal access to information, quality education, and artistic freedom. Naima's career as a writer began with diary entries, prison letters, and grammar school oratory. For more information, email njahmaal@gmail.com. |

POEMS OF THE WEEK
Betas and Cichlids
I have always wanted a pet
I never really felt responsible enough
For a puppy-not one of my own
I liked cats, but worried about the furniture
Eventually, I learned to appreciate aquariums
Until one day, I solicited the advice of a friend
About purchasing a fish,
When he asked,
"How would you feel
if you lived in a world of rivers,
but someone captured you and
told you that your new home
was a ten-gallon tank?"
I have since learned
to appreciate natural order.
God knows no competition.
Naima Jahmaal
Love Personified
I turned to the mirror
To gaze and my image
And wallow in self pity
Because you love not only me
But several others
Then why do I yearn for love,
When love is so cruel?
I sat down in front of the mirror
So that I could stare at myself and cry
But I beheld such beauty
And I asked why?
Why should I cry?
And get those beautiful bright eyes
Swollen and red
Why should I get my face tear-stained,
To smear the coolness of my complexion?
I told myself no!
Being the aesthetic that I am
I hate to spoil true beauty
So I didn't cry
I thanked my Maker instead
For in the mirror I beheld
The beauty of God's creation
I am love personified!
Queen Majeeda
