THE ORIGIN OF KWANZAA (Wikipedia)

Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration held in the united States honoring universal African-American heritage and culture.  Kwanzaa is observed from December 26 to January 1 each year. It features activities such as the lighting of a kinara and libations, and culminates in a feast and gift giving.  Kwanzaa was created by Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated from December 26, 1966 to January 1, 1967.

Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the following principles, as follows:
  • Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems, and to solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  • Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith): To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Happy Holidays:

pepadopted
Me with my "adopted" holiday child in 2009
Whatever you celebrate at this time of the year, I wish you love, joy, happiness, and peace.

If you are not connecting with your family or loved ones, my wish is that you enjoy the time with people you actually like. If you end up alone, I am sending some warm wishes your way so you will be in great spirits and I pray you enjoy your own company and take the time to reconnect with YOU.

Like the past few years, I will be celebrating both Christmas and Kwanzaa this year and I am super-excited that I will have my parents, one of my sisters and my son with me. Having family and loved ones during the holiday season is the best present Christmas present ever!

For the last few years, I have been getting into Kwanzaa celebrations and I must admit that I always have a great time at these events - learning new things and being in the company of peaceful and positive people.  Kwanzaa was introduced to me by my Godmother, Dr. Akilah Karima a few years ago, and for the last three years I have celebrated KUJICHAGULIA with the UNIA-ACL division 332.  Speaking of the UNIA-ACL, I am sending extra special warm wishes to Brother Faruq Muhammad at this time of the year.  If you know Faruq, please link me offline so we can rap about how we can support him during this difficult period in his life.

Below are my two picks for Kwanzaa celebrations in the DC area, and to the left is a little article on the history of Kwanzaa.

Happy Holidays and remember that love is the greatest gift, especially at this time of the year.

As you may be aware, we are launching a new talk show, entitled "PEP Talk!" on January 1, 2011.
This date was carefully selected as it represents the birth of this new project, welcoming a new year, and more importantly the celebration of the 7th principle of Kwanzaa --
Imani (Faith).
Like the principle says, we firmly "believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle."
If we continue to have Imani (Faith) in ourselves, each other, our community, our leaders, and the people around us who are doing great things in the community, we will all be victorious.

We are very excited about PEP Talk! which will be edgy, funny, witty, informative, necessary,  and so much more!
We look forward to featuring very interesting personalities who are doing great things in their personal lives and various communities.  Since these people do not typically get mainstream media attention, the onus is on us and YOU to make this talk show successful.
