A SALUTE TO MARCUS GARVEY:

The Father of African Nationalism
On this date, 123 years ago, a great world leader was born in St. Ann's Bay,
Jamaica. At one time, he was the most talked-about Black man on the planet, but
he died in 1940 a largely forgotten figure on the world scene. Nevertheless,
Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the "Father of African Nationalism," remains one of the most influential sons of Africa in all history.
His influence can be seen in the organization of the Nation of Islam; the
inspiration for leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya (as well as the colors of their nations' flags); the African-African American
Summits and self-help philosophy of Reverend Leon H. Sullivan, and even
non-African leaders such as Ho Chi Mihn of Vietnam, who observed Garveyism
during his time in New York City.
Marcus Garvey arrived in America in 1916 at a critical time in our history. The
post-civil War freedoms won had been eroded by racist government officials who
created laws limiting the rights of Black Americans and vicious white mobs that
lynched and otherwise killed thousands of Black people. There was an effort to
win the freedom of Black people, but it was split among those who wanted to play down political rights to concentrate on economic self-sufficiency and those who believed a "talented tenth" could be the vanguard of a resurgence of Black
political power.

Friends,

Last week was an incredible one for me on a professional and personal level.  I was privileged to be a part of many positively uplifting events and network with an abundance of amazing people.

Bilal Sunni-Ali

It started with the Bilal Sunni-Ali concert on Thursday which left me feeling more spiritual than I have ever felt in my life (while under the influence of a live musical performance).  For once I am at a loss for words to truly describe the experience I had while I sat there and allowed myself to just BE IN THE MOMENT and feel the sweet vibrations of the drums from Bonita Cacho and friends which started off the night.  All the musicians were on point but Bilal Sunni-Ali took me to another level.  Those of you who really enjoy LIVE performances know that an artist has to really come GOOD to totally impress you the first time you ever hear or see them perform. Bilal was better than good and I remain in awe.  Shout outs to all the positive people who were in the house last Thursday and big ups to Baye Services and Movementunes.com for bringing this incredible artist to my area.  Click HERE to listen and purchase music from Bilal Sunni-Ali.

On Friday, I was a part of a company retreat which took place in the Chesapeake Bay area and I would like to applaud my Executive Director, Mae Best for making this happen.  It does not matter where you work or IF you work, the importance of creating an environment which fosters "effective teaming" cannot be over-emphasized.  All of us have to work in some team capacity in different areas of our lives so please pay attention to the unique role YOU play in ensuring that the team you are on is cohesive.  Shout out to Dr. Jackie Henry for making the retreat so memorable.

Saturday was all about hanging with friends and enjoying TARRUS RILEY.  Some of you are very tired of hearing me rant and rave about Tarrus Riley but guess what?  Respect is due to this talented brother.  The show at Zanzibar was beautiful...Gramps Morgan's performance was excellent; Black Soil Band and Dean Fraser were awesome; and Tarrus Riley -- well, Tarrus Riley is just AMAZING!  Nuff said but kudos to the promoters, Origin of Man Productions for nicing up Zanzibar on Saturday night.  Big ups to Punisha, Ras Dream I and Tweeta Bird for representing for the DMV area.

On Sunday, the "Taste JAMAICA Festival" was a very nice event which showcased Jamaica's arts, crafts, food, heritage fashion, and so much more.  It was a celebration of Jamaica's 48th Independence and everyone who were in attendance visibly enjoyed the day out with family and friends.  For me, it was a joy hosting the Fashion Show segment which highlighted beautiful designs from House of DMarsh, Jennifer Selman, Island Code Tees, and Buy Jamaica Online.  The models were excellent, especially Caribbean Professional Network's own, Finiana Joseph.  The entertainment was stellar, the food was great, and winning the raffle for a trip to Sunset Jamaica Grande was surreal.  Shout outs to Moreen Wallace of I Love Reggae, Jamaican Nationals Association, Jamaican Association of Maryland, all the vendors and sponsors who made the day very exceptional.
