Family:
Last week I did not get a chance to check in as I was busy working on another project that required my time and attention. While I was doing MY THING, many things were happening in the DMV and other areas and some folks thought I was hibernating. NOT A CHANCE IN THE SUMMERTIME!!! I am confident that my readers are now in the habit of checking out things for themselves so even though you missed me, I KNOW that you did some research on your own and kept up with the "happenings." Also last week, I got a number of emails and phone calls and was happy to speak to many parents who were out enjoying the summer holidays with their children. Just like adults need a vacation from work and the "norm," children also need an enjoyable break when they are out of school. Many parents are extremely elated to get a break from their children who are off spending the Summer with other relatives or in other countries/places experiencing different cultures. Hopefully none of the parents are experiencing separation issues, especially after constantly complaining about how much "these kids get on my last nerves."
The importance of volunteerism and community service cannot be overemphasized so it is a great idea to get your children involved in helping others and supporting important causes before they head back to school. Since I am a vacation-junkie, you should not be surprised to hear me say that is is a super-duper expialidocious thing to spend vacation time with your children (especially the young ones). If you cannot afford a vacation, then make the time to do some really fun things with them during this beautiful season!this with This week, I am very excited and quite relieved because I have completed my project and that is another hurdle that I jumped over! My group did an awesome production and deserve all the hi-fives we have been getting. Big ups to my co-producers, Heru Ofori-Atta and Lenora Jones. Thanks to my editors, Tiffany King and Mark Leeke; my instructor, Bob Thomas; and the crew at Life Pieces to Masterpieces for allowing us to come in and tell their story. Next week, I will share the project with you, so stay tuned! Happy belated birthday to Stephany McGann, Ann-Marie Davy and Mae Best, and happy upcoming birthday to Loide Jorge, Arlene Farrier, Ogo Amobi, Minnie Allen, Douglas Rodgers and everyone else celebrating this week.Continue to have a safe and enjoyable second quarter and I look forward to seeing you out and about now that life is less hectic for me.Rosie "Peppy" Parke Creative Director PEP, LLC |

Reggae/Dancehall Singer, Sugar Minott Dead at 54 Many were shocked to learn that popular reggae and dancehall singer and songwriter, Sugar Minott passed away on Saturday, July 10 at University Hospital, Kingston. According to Peter Burke, a close associate of the singer, Sugar Minott
had complained of feeling ill on Saturday and was taken to the hospital
where he died at minutes after 10 pm.
"Sugar had a heart condition and it was about a year and
a half ago that he got the first scare. He was in Canada at the time
and I was with him. But as soon as the flutters subsided, Sugar was
back to being his old self. That is just how he is," Burke told the
Observer.
"This is just so sudden and unexpected. Sugar Minott has made a major
contribution to the music business ... he was truly an icon and I am
going to miss him tremendously," Burke said. Lincoln Barrington "Sugar" Minott's (pronounced My-naht) was born on
May 25, 1956. His career began in the late '60s as a selector (D.J.)
for several sound systems and then as a member of the reggae trio The
African Brothers. The group's music was influenced by the early
Rastafari movement. In the '70s Minott worked extensively with Clement
"Coxsone" Dodd at Dodd's famed Studio One studios. There he developed
his songwriting and musician skills by singing and playing guitar and
percussion on numerous sessions for other artists, as well as his own
songs. He recorded hits like "Vanity," "Oh Mr. DC" and "House Is Not A
Home." Minott also found particular success writing songs over existing
riddims, which would become a hallmark of dancehall music. In 1981 he
scored a hit with a cover of the Jackson 5's "Good Thing Going," which
charted at number 4 in England. Minott also promoted new artists through his Black Roots and
Youth Promotion labels. He nurtured many reggae and dancehall stars,
including Garnett Silk, Junior Reid, and the late Tenor Saw.
Minott's latest album New Day is scheduled to be released on July 21, according to his website. The album New Day features production by UK-based Roman Pryce and appearances by peers Josey Wales, Ranking Trevor and more. (Sources: Jamaica Observer and Prefixmag.com)
We here at Peppy Entertainment & Promotions extend condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Sugar Minott who gave us soooooo much great music to jam to and learn from. Be sure to get his new album when it releases on July 21.

A Call For Help for Faruq Muhammad, UNIA's Counsel General |
Faruq Muhammad underwent major surgery in April 2009 for a life-threatening
disease, a very rare form of cancer known as chordoma. The surgery was
less than successful - the chordoma has returned and has left our
brother with debilitating side effects. He also has undergone a second
major quadruple bypass heart surgery in December 2009. His medications
are numerous and expensive and his pain is most often extreme. He is
taking 14 medications for pain, heart issues, and blood pressure. In
addition he has 3 hospice appointments, 9 physical therapies sessions
with 5 different therapists and numerous doctors and tests per week.
This warrior is at times unable to stand, sit, walk, sleep or
concentrate for more than several minutes, and yet he struggles
through. In addition, and because he has always been self-employed, he
has had to wage an energy-sapping struggle battle to get disability and
Medicaid, which, unfortunately, only cover very basic medical
attention.
Although his family and friends have made valiant
sacrifices over the past year to help him with his bills, with
transportation to doctors' appointments, with his access to food and
medicines, and with his bouts of depression and despair, we are now
reaching out to everyone who knows this special man for help.

| 4TH ANNUAL MISS CARIBBEAN METRO (USA) PAGEANT
The 4th
Annual Miss Caribbean Metro (USA)
pageant will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Charles Herbert
Performing Arts Center located at 10001 Ardwick Ardmore Road,
Springdale, Maryland, 20774. The reigning Queen, Miss Chardelle
Moore who represents the beautiful island of Dominica will crown her successor at
the end of the event.
12 contestants representing various Caribbean countries such
as but not limited to Jamaica, Barbados, Cayman Island, Guyana, and Trinidad
are expected to compete. These
girls
will showcase true Caribbean beauty, intelligence and talent making the
show an even more memorable and exciting one than previous years.
The pageant was conceptualized as a result of a young
woman's love for pageantry. As a former queen, she produced the event as a
means of empowering and enlightening young Caribbean women to become
ambassadors and role models for the Caribbean community with the rare opportunity
to show their cultural pride and leadership in a culturally blended society. According
to the President/Founder, Ms. Sheryl Gordon, "our
mission, is to strive to publicly recognize and celebrate the accomplishment of
these women who have obtained personal, professional and community achievements
through various Caribbean communities within the Washington Metropolitan
areas."
In
highlighting the different segments for the show, Ms.
Gordon revealed that an unforgettable Opening Act will "set the night
on fire" as
contestants unwind and prepare the audience for what will follow. The
most
anticipated and sought after segment -- the swim suit competition, will
follow and contestants will show off their well-toned and lean
physiques. The talent
segment, which stimulates the audience and demonstrates unique talents
of the contestants will follow shortly, and the evening wear segment
and interview will cap the
event.
The organizers are dedicated to promoting the Caribbean
culture, international cultural awareness and community significance and have
always given to a charitable organization. This year,
part proceeds from the event will be donated to the Haitian Embassy to
provide ongoing relief and support for our neighboring families. Committee
members and Miss Caribbean Metro USA express their profound sorrow and hope
for recovery to the people of Haiti and their Diaspora as they cope with the
tragedy of epic proportions.
Please join us as we celebrate "Beauty on Purpose" of these
fantastic young ladies on Saturday, July 24.
