Happy Memorial Day Weekend
May 28, 2010
|
|
Family,
Last week when I wrote about there being trouble in paradise, I anticipated that things would escalate, but not to the levels it actually did this week! Like most Jamaicans, I spent most of this week keeping my ears open for any news concerning the state of the country. To hear that one man is responsible for such mayhem and madness makes me realize that in today's society, many think it is actually cool to be a criminal. When politicians lie in bed with criminals, what do they expect? Do not believe the hype that Christopher "Dudus" Coke is just your typical drug lord. He is the son of the late Lester Lloyd "Jim Brown" Coke and apparently cronies with members of the ruling Jamaican Labour Party (JLP). This whole turn of events shows how power corrupts (in the political arena). Former JLP leader, Edward Seaga had much respect for Jim Brown when he was alive and wreaking havoc in the Jamaican society. He even remarked on national television (in defense of Jim Brown) "Look at the man in terms of how the community respects and treats him -- as a protector of their community." Now that Prime Minister Bruce Golding is leading the country, Seaga is now basically calling him an idiot for not keeping things under control...such hypocrisy! With the death toll up to 100 and Dudus still at large, it seems safe to say that Christopher "Dudus" Coke is more elusive than Bin Laden; has more power than the entire Jamaican Government; and is a god in his own right. If you have not been following the news, just Google Dudus.
Speaking of prime ministers, congratulations are in order for Kamla Persad-Bissessar who won the recent elections in Trinidad and Tobago to become the T&T's first female prime minister. Persad-Bissessar, 58, led her People's Partnership coalition to a
landslide win over incumbent Prime Minister Patrick Manning in Monday's
election in this energy-rich southern Caribbean nation. The coalition
won 29 of the 41 seats in Parliament. Mannings' PNM won just 12. READ MORE HERE.
Condolences to the family and friends of Oneil Edwards of the Jamaican dancehall trio, Voicemail who succumbed to his wounds this week. Oneil had been shot on May 9, days after he celebrated his birthday and was in the hospital battling for his life. One of his assailants has since been found dead and
another held by police. A third remains at large. Born May 8, 1974,
O'Neil a new father, is survived by his six-week-old daughter, his life
partner, his mother, five sisters and four brothers. To Oneil's family and the Voicemail crew, I say "And this too shall pass."
For those of you who live in the USA, be sure to have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend and do not forget the reason why this holiday is being celebrated: to honor and recognize the men and women who have given up their lives in service of the USA.
If you live in the Greater Washington DC area and would like to hike with a bunch of us to Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson, MD tomorrow, Saturday, May 29, email [email protected].
Have a beautiful week,

She hails from Trelawny, Jamaica and has a personal story that will make you cry. She practiced law for years and then decided that she would put everything on hold and concentrate on writing her novel. She has a husband who is her best friend, and a son who is the love of her life. She is Racquel Brown Gaston -- author of the book "Deadly Instincts" and she is making waves in the USA and in Jamaica. Currently on a book tour of sorts, Racquel just returned from the National Black Book Festival in Houston, Texas and is on her way to NY where she will be honored at the Annual Trelawny Reunion. "Racquel, you did your thing with this book!
It took me a while to get started with the hectic schedule that I have
but, after digging in I couldn't put it down! I am not an avid reader
because I am in school and reading those textbooks can turn a person
off from any other readings. However, I was determined to take every
spare moment that I had to finish this book. Believe it or not I did it
in one weekend because I couldn't put it down. I told myself that I
would read one chapter then come back to it. But after reading one
chapter, then another and another, I couldn't put it down, I was
hooked! This was definitely an easy read. I can't wait to see this in
the movies. I am wishing you all the best Racquel. Luv ya :)!" Gina Sargeant-Phifer |
"Serious Business" will be hilarious!
|
"Serious
Business," which features Keith "Shebada" Ramsay and an all-star
cast, is written by Paul O'Beale and directed by Michael Nicholson.
"Serious Business" is a top-rate, hilarious play from the Stages
Production camp that follows in the footsteps of their Bashment Granny success. Opening to rave
reviews and sold-out performances in Jamaica, a strong buzz for the debut of
"Serious Business" has now taken over the US East coast as the play
makes its way along the coast. The gut-busting punch
of "Serious Business" will surely keep audiences in stitches. In
"Serious Business," one pastor finds himself amidst controversy in
the church, home and street. As problems unfold for the pastor, his hidden
agenda may just get exposed. With the church as the play's backdrop, sheer
laughter embodies the play from start to finish. |
