May is Older Americans Month
May 19, 2010

Family,
This past Saturday, I had the occasion
to do the Billy Goat Trail hike with a couple friends and had many moments of
amazement at the beauty of nature! We live in such a beautiful world -- even those places we take for granted. On Saturday, the air was nice, the atmosphere was serene and peaceful, the company was great, and at times I forgot that I was actually in Maryland, USA. I saw rocks, waterfalls, lakes, turtles, geese, lizards, birds, old boats, flowers, and so many things that made me stop to give thanks to a higher power. The experience I had on Saturday reminded me of growing up in Kingston, Jamaica and taking the beauty of the island for granted -- until I started making weekend trips to various parishes and discovered that I was actually living in paradise! "When mi check it out, lawd...no weh nuh betta dan yaad." Now that the
weather is really getting more beautiful, you owe it to yourselves to
go out and discover what is right around the corner from you (wherever you live). Your
vacation can actually be in your hometown -- if you plan it right and your pocket is tight!
There has been trouble in "paradise" this week, so I am asking everyone to say a prayer for that beautiful and vibrant island called Jamaica. The Prime Minister, Bruce Golding who many want to resign needs more than prayers! Apart from the battered economy in Jamaica, the issue concerning Christopher "Dudus" Coke had the island literally on lock-down on Monday, and up to seconds before I sent this newsletter out, things were getting even "stickier." Jamaica needs a complete makeover FAST! Maybe Mr. Golding should put "Makeover Plan for Jamaica" on his Labor Day To Do List and convince the people that his plan has merit and he is fit to lead the country. Jamaica will celebrate Labor Day this coming Monday, May 23 and the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) seems to be in hot water...(to be continued).

Congrats to Ethlyn Grant on her Masters in Global Health. Happy birthday to Buddha, Mahasin Muhammad-Mais, my sister, Maxine and everyone celebrating this week. A very special happy birthday to Ms. Veronica Wisdom who will be 102 on May 23. Condolences to Dionne Brown and family on the passing of Uncles Les, and Marlene Johnson on the passing of her grandmother who was 106. Happy belated Flag Day to Haiti.
Have a beautiful week,

President Obama Criticizes Arizona Immigration Law (Source: Yahoo News)
| (Below: Mexico's President Calderon with President Obama at news conference)
Speaking at a joint news conference with Mexico's President, Felipe Calderon, Obama called for overhauling the nation's immigration laws and said that can't be done unless Republicans support it. President Obama called the Arizona bill "misdirected" and warned that it had the potential to be used in a discriminatory fashion.
The controversy over the Arizona law, which would make it a state crime to be in the country illegally, hung over Calderon's visit. Both leaders oppose the law, with Obama directing the Justice Department to review it for possible civil rights violations, and Calderon's government issuing a travel warning for Arizona, out of concern that Mexicans face an adverse political environment there.

Jamaica Jamaica's Sharon Hendricks' Story
| My Mom said she always knew
I would be a chef. She recalls that while other children where
making mud pies, I created well seasoned and decorated "cakes" that
looked good enough to eat. I can remember being in the family kitchen --
the different smells, and roars of laughter, conversation, and the FOOD!!!!
Like most Caribbean families, food is a very big part of everyday life.
Food became one of my greatest passions! While helping my Mother
in her Catering business, she taught me how to prepare wholesome foods
using fresh ingredients with respect, love and care for those who ate
it. THIS is the standard that I live by. Being raised in
Jamaica and New York, I was exposed to Caribbean and International foods
and found innovative ways to cook dishes with a Caribbean flare.
The concept of a Jamaican eatery
that represented our island -- the culture, sights, sounds and flavors
was born. A place where people could come, enjoy a meal, good
conversation, debate current events and participate in exciting domino
matches, while soaking up our warm hospitality and spirit.
My ex-husband, Lloyd Washington
and I developed this vision after realizing that there were no places like this in Northern Virginia. In October 2005 - Jamaica Jamaica
opened it's doors and welcomed those looking for home cooking and
diversity. In November of that same year,
we were featured in the Washington Post; it was one of my family's
proudest moments.
Although my kitchen is industrial,
the only difference between the way I cook here and at home, is the
size of my pots. I put the same love and attention into what I
prepare for my extended family as I do for my immediate family.
Over the years I have had the
privilege to feed MANY including Redskins past and present (Renaldo
Wynn, Chris Samuels, the late Sean Taylor, Anthony Montgomery, Sean Springs,
Fred Smoot...and more). I derive great satisfaction in seeing
people well fed.
Regulars to Jamaica Jamaica
become family. Customers recognize each other and are always greeted
with what has become my signature "Hi baby, what are you having today?"
Daily items include jerk chicken, curry chicken, stew chicken, oxtail, and goat. I prepare fish to order and can whip up specialty dishes
if called in ahead.
Music is always playing in
the background -- usually Reggae. Musicians stop by often to show love
and grace us with a song or two. Jamaica Jamaica is happening! Visit www.jamaica2x.com to learn more. We hope to see you at JAMAICA JAMAICA very soon. JAMAICA JAMAICA is the venue for "Through Literary, the Arts, and Music" featuring Ky-Mani Marley, Kehv, Justin Matthew and others on May 29 (see flier below in Events Section). |

CONNIE CAMPBELL STILL NEEDS YOUR HELP
| (Connie Campbell performing in happier times)

|
Many of you showed your support by attending the fundraiser for Connie a month or so ago. Some of you have made donations to the account which was set up for her; some of you have visited her in the hospital; some of you have joined her Facebook page; and some of you still do not know who she is. Connie Campbell is a backup singer who had a stroke backstage last year while waiting to perform at Crossroads Club in Maryland. She is also a mother, and a human being who could use YOUR help. You do not need to have known her -- just know that she is hanging on for dear life, and needs all the support she can get! Please do what you can as her situation is beyond precarious. What happened to her could have happened to anyone of us, and I would like to think that if one of us were in HER situation, we would like to know that there are caring folks out there. Click on Connie's photo above to get all the information you need on her Facebook Fan Page. If you find it in your heart (and pockets) and want to make a donation, the account information is below. The money you will spend on your next meal or shopping trip could have helped to save Connie's life. Connie Campbell Foundation Account Information: RBTT 4410317200406 326 - for Jamaica RBTT 4410317200406 318 - for the USA...
