LIA'S HOLIDAY POEM Urban Peak Phoenix Rising
| What if we were all gods? I've heard it before: I am a spiritual being having a "human" experience.
What if people really are good, that compassion spreads and love can grow?
What if I don't forget about all the terrible things that ever happened to me but integrate that into my humanity?
What if planting a seed really does bear fruit, and because we're all here, we are changing our lives?
What if my life is not defined by the things l've done or those I've known but by what I have to write about at the end?
What if all the lies I ever told myself weren't true And I am just another wanderer in the world?

DO YOU BELIEVE?
|
The holidays are a time to believe in magic and miracles. But for some young people in our community, painful events and circumstances have eroded their faith in such ideas. They no longer believe in magic and miracles. They don't even believe in themselves anymore. But we do. Faith is something hoped for yet unseen. Some may have a difficult time seeing the beauty and power in our youth, but through their poetry you can hear the love and wisdom that is unseen.
At Art from Ashes, we help young people feel heard, develop a sense of self, and relate to others, so that they can create a positive future for themselves and their communities. We believe in magic and miracles, because we witness it every day in our powerful workshops.
Rather than declaring the behavior of high-risk youth an outrage and filling our correctional institutions with discarded young lives, consider supporting our poetry programs with a tax-deductible donation instead.
· $2,000 supports a year's worth of weekly 2-hour workshops for a struggling young person.
· $1,400 provides one-month's rent (ooh, if 12 people did that...)
· $250 allows us to publish the youth poems from one 8-week session.
· $100 purchases writing materials for two workshops.
· $35 allows us to bring in one guest poet/artist to inspire and encourage the youth in our programs.
And of course, any amount you give from a place of joy gives to all of us, yourself included.

Letter from Catherine
HOLIDAY METAPHORS... Appreciation or Cynicism?
Greetings! It is the most difficult time of year for the youth in our workshops and for many, many others who have experienced great loss or who recognize that their lives are nothing like those portrayed in the media. Consequently the curriculum we use addresses those painful discrepancies faced by the youth -- particularly in detention or treatment centers.
If you have similar feelings that consumerism is king and your families are not "picture perfect"... or if you've lost someone and so have lost the joy, I encourage you to be present to the messages of peace and hope that are sometimes lost in the chaos. Behind every distorted interpretation, there is the reality of the kindness and love that generated it in the first place.
Please remember that the greatest joy is in giving, and that the greatest gift is to recognize the beauty and power that dwells in the least of us. The presents we give reflect a simple metaphor of that recognition. So, give indiscriminately this season! Especially to those who fail to see the beauty and power in you or in themselves.
Cheers,

$300 at 10,000! thank you for shopping
|
Last month's difficult task was shopping and earlier this year it was eating. You did very well. We're super proud.
And of course, this month's challenge is to drink heavily at Appaloosa Grill. Are you up for it?
Just so you know, Ten Thousand Villages management informed me that they'd never seen so many people on their "cause" night. They wanted to know our secret.
It's simple. The people who support us are passionate, giving, beautiful, and shopaholics. Again, we're so proud.
